People screw up. How we react to them is important. Many want to get on a judgmental high horse and point fingers in an effort to "fix" them, when in all actuality, they are breaking the broken even more. The person who screwed up doesn't need a heavy, harsh hand in those times. They need something totally different. When you hear the word "meekness" or "gentleness," the last thing you think of is power or strength. Yet meekness is NOT weakness! In fact, meekness has more power to fix than any harsh words or actions. If an Olympic athlete purposely tried not to win the gold but instead tried to win the bronze (third place), we would consider that athlete a complete failure for not trying to come in first place. Our society tells us we must come in first place, that we deserve to win, and we should knock everyone out of the way to be first. The Bible tells a totally different story. Sadly, many have not experienced true, radical kindness in churches or from Christians. Far from it. Some Christians, some churches are so graceless, harsh and critical that it's hard to fathom. It definitely shouldn't be that way. Glen Campbell recorded a surprisingly Gospel-centered (whether intentional or not) called "Try a Little Kindness." Christians should doing more than just trying a little kindness. Kindness is to flow from us. Kindness is to be who we are. The (terrible) last episode of Seinfeld saw the four friends arrested for walking by a crime and doing nothing to help. What was used for laughs in a sitcom has no place in real life. We as Christians MUST care about and help those in need when we can, whether financial mental, physical, emotional needs. But we must have the right heart when we do, a heart filled with compassion. So many think they need to clean up their act before coming to Jesus, thinking they can earn their way into heaven. That's backwards thinking. We have to trust in and believe in Jesus first to be saved. Then He starts the clean-up process in us. While we don't clean up before salvation, our behavior after salvation needs to show a drastic change, as if we were a totally different person. Want to learn more?
