Hope Lutheran Church, AALC, is nestled in the rural countryside of S.E.Iowa, about 7 miles south of Brighton, Jefferson County. The congregation consists of a broad range of ages, from the older generation, to the very young, who can be heard throughout the church on Sunday mornings! The organization of Hope Lutheran Church dates back to 1845, a year before Iowa was admitted to the Union. The firs
t church was made of logs and built on nearly the same sight as the current building. The first services were spoken in German, with English not introduced until 1900. In 1862, the log church was replaced with a framed building. The statue of Jesus Christ, which is currently on the altar, as well as the lectern, which is in use today, were both from the old frame church, The current church was built in 1913, with the cornerstone inscribed with the words: “Evangelical Lutheran Hope Church A.D. 1913” The cemetery sits east of the church, overlooking the valley below. From the east and west, you will experience some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets, painted by the hand of God. There is a spectacular view of a lush green valley to the east in the spring through fall. It is a peaceful countryside that lets you rest in the presence of the Almighty God.
