𝑯𝒆 𝒊𝒔 𝒑𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒑𝒖𝒓𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆.

𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: ‘Phonies & Fakes’ Pt. 3
𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 2 Peter 3:1-9
𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁: God’s promise of Christ’s return is certain, even if it seems delayed; the delay is mercy, not failure.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀:
1. The Reminder of Truth (vv.1-2)
• Beloved - deeply loved ones
• Stir up - to wake up; to arouse from sleep; to shake someone awake
• Sincere - pure, unmixed, genuine; judged by sunlight
• 2 Peter 1:13
• The prophet said “He is coming.”
• The apostles said “He has come and He is coming again.”
• John 6:29, Acts 2:38, Acts 20:21, Titus 2:14
• Repentance is a decisive turning of the heart and life toward God
• Belief is trusting in Jesus Christ alone to save you

2. The Fake Message they will Teach (vv.3-5)
• First of all - this you must continually recognize as first in importance
• Scoffers - mockers, ridiculers; those who make fun of or treat something serious as joke
• What the scoffers will do:
1. Follow their own sinful desires
2. They teach that all things will continue as they are.
- Uniformitarianism - everything has always continued in the same way it does now
3. They deny or dismiss the promise of Christ’s return and His judgment
• The return of Christ and the coming judgment is not an optional doctrine, it is a promised reality

3. The Truth the Phonies are Ignoring (vv.5-7)
• What they are deliberately ignoring:
1. God created everything by His Word
- Genesis 1:1,3,6
- Word - logos
- Logos - word, message, statement, spoken declaration
- John 1:1
2. God didn’t just create, He also judged
- Genesis 6:17, 7:11-12
3. He will do it again
- 2 Peter 3:7- The world is "stored up for fire," kept for judgment
- Acts 17:31 - God has "fixed a day" to judge the world
- Jude 1:6- Angels "kept in chains" until the judgment day
- Romans 2:5- People are "storing up wrath" for the day of judgment
- Malachi 4:1- Day of judgment burns like an oven
- 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8- Jesus returns "in flaming fire" for judgment
- Hebrews 10:27- "Fury of fire" waiting for the enemies of God

4. The Delay is not Neglect but Mercy (vv.8-9)
• His point is… what looks like delay to man is no delay at all to an eternal God

𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀:
1. Repent and Believe
2. Live in light of glory

𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: ‘Phonies & Fakes’ Part 2
𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 2 Peter 2:10b-22
𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁: False teachers can be recognized by their present characteristics, and their end ultimately confirms it.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀:
1. Their Arrogance (vv.10b-13a)
• Philippians 1:14
• Bold- daring, audacious, and outspoken in a way that ignores restraint or reverence.
• Willful- self-willed, stubbornly determined, governed by one’s own desires.
• Jude 1:8-10
• To “suffer wrong” means they will experience the deserved consequences of their unrighteous actions

2. Their Visible Corruption (vv.13b-16)
• To “revel” means to indulge with enjoyment.
• Luke 8:17
• Galatians 5:8-9
• Colossians 1:28
• James 1:14–15
• Numbers 22:8–13
• Numbers 22:21–33

3. Their Empty Promises (vv.17-19)
• John 17:16–17
• John 8:31-32
• Anything not rooted in Christ will eventually collapse into emptiness.

4. Their End (vv. 20–22)
• “holy commandment” is not a single isolated rule, but a way Peter is summarizing the gospel call to obedient faith in Christ.
• Matthew 24:3-13
• False teachers are…
- arrogant in spirit
- corrupt in desire
- deceptive in method
- empty in promise
- enslaved in reality
- and ruined in the end
