𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗲: ‘Phonies & Fakes’
𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: 2 Peter 2:1-10
𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁: There are people who look real and sound right, but are actually false teachers who lead others away from the truth, and God will judge them while faithfully rescuing His people.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀:
1. The Presence of the Phonies and the Fakes (vv.1–3)
• False prophets were primarily in the Old Testament
• They claimed to speak new revelation from God
• “Thus says the Lord…”
• False teachers are what the church deals with now primarily.
• They distort and misinterpret what God has already said
• What false teachers do...
1. They infiltrate God's people
2. They operate subtly
- They're slick and quiet
3. They introduce destructive lies
- Heresies- teachings that depart from the true gospel
- Destructive - anything that corrupts truth, leads people into sin, and ultimately pulls them away from Christ rather than building them up in Him
4. They distort or deny Christ
- Twist the only way unto salvation
5. They bring judgment on themselves
- “Swift destruction” - certain, sudden, and unavoidable ruin.
• John 14:6 ESV
• Blaspheme - to speak evil of, slander, or discredit something so that it is treated as false, worthless, or dishonorable in the eyes of others, causing the truth to be misrepresented and maligned because of those who claim to represent it

2. The Pattern of Judgment (vv.4–8)
• Angels judged - Genesis 6:1-4, Jude 6
• World flooded - Genesis 6:5-7, 7:17-23
• S***m destroyed - Genesis 18:20-21, 19:24-25

3. The Promise of Justice (v.9)
• He rescues the godly
• He reserves the unrighteous
• God's patience is not weakness. It is mercy.

4. The Proof of Their Nature (v.10)
• Their internal nature shows up in external behavior
- “Indulge the flesh” - they are governed by desires, not obedience
- “Despise authority” - they resist submission to God’s rule and God’s order
• A false teacher may look like someone who...
- looks spiritual on the outside but is driven by fleshly desires
- uses faith language but is ruled by personal appetite
- rejects or resists God’s authority in practice
- twists Scripture instead of submitting to it
- uses people instead of shepherding people
- is motivated by greed, gain, or personal platform
- is persuasive but not truthful
- attracts crowds but produces corruption
- downplays repentance and holiness
- promotes a message that leaves people unchanged
- speaks boldly about things they don’t truly understand
- treats sin lightly while claiming to represent God
