God is with us in hard times, in the dark valleys. Jesus knew what was ahead for him. Even though he knew it needed to happen, he wasn't looking forward to it! As the time of his death got closer, he drew his friends close and took time to pray. Loved ones are a gift, especially when we face hard times. Who could you call up or face time with today? Is there a friend or neighbor that would enjoy some time with you during this time that feels lonely for so many?

We talked about Jesus being our shepherd on Sunday in our Zoom meetings. Shepherds would often have to stay out all night, keeping watch over their flocks. They kept warm by wearing camel-hair cloaks or cloaks made from sheepskin, like this one here. A shepherd could use the hook on the end of his crook to lift a sheep out of danger. His wooden rod had pieces of flint or nails driven into the end. It was used to drive away wild animals who wanted to harm the sheep. The bowl was used to bring water to an injured sheep. Taking care of sheep was a big responsibility! How has he taken care of your family this week? How has he been your shepherd through this uncertain time?

In the rush of normal life, we often feel we don't have time to make dinner, let alone take the time to teach kids how to do it. With all this extra time with our kids, it's a great opportunity to teach some skills that help keep the household going. Depending on your child's age, there are lots of things they can do to help out. This will make them feel like they are teaming up with the family to get through this. Ideas: laundry, putting silverware away, scrubbing cupboards, fixing a simple meal or two, scrubbing the table down after dinner, matching socks, folding towels, vacuuming, sweeping...

Going outside is important! Reduce anxiety with exercise and fresh air. Often children's anxiety needs to be addressed from the body up, and one of the quickest ways to change the biology of anxiety in our bodies is with outdoor exercise. Try this trail near "Candy Cane Park".

A couple people have asked for ideas about what to do during the Flatten the Curve isolation time. Kids need to know what's coming up. They do well in school because there is a rhythm to the day that they can depend on. Sit down with them and make a schedule. Ask their input about the order of the day. Talk about the new challenges you are facing as a family and how everyone in the family can help with the solutions to those. Share your stressors as well (having enough time to work and assist kids etc.) Your kids can help come up with solutions to that too! We are all in this together:)

Family members tend to hurt each other more than anyone else. Ask your kids about a time when someone hurt them. How did the situation end? Why do they think God asks us NOT to hurt people?
