TEMPLE HISTORY
This is how it all began....

Some 500 Japanese families comprising of over 2,500 persons had begun living and working at Seabrook Farms during 1944-1947 at the height of the relocation program. Seabrook, founder of a huge vegetable processing industry located in the prime agricultural area of Southern New Jersey, through an agreement with the War Relocation Authority, had given hi

s all-out assurance of a smooth and profitable resettlement and many Japanese Americans were attracted by his offer. However, after a confinement of nearly three years in concentration camps, adjusting to yet another new environment was not easy for the Japanese Americans. Realizing the difficulty faced by these people who were laboring long hours both day and night, and their need for spiritual uplift, the Reverends Shosetsu Tsufura and Zaishin Mukushina, who had likewise relocated to Seabrook to work in the plant, began holding Sunday services which were open to all Buddhist sects. This was followed by the formation of a Buddhist Church in the winter of 1945 with Kaoru Kamikawa as church president. TEMPLE SERVICE
Seabrook Buddhist Temple provides meditation services every Wed. evening from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. During the sessions we will introduce various ways to achieve a meditative state of mind. This includes, but is not limited to, breathing exercise, tolling of the bell, use of a singing bowl, guided imagery and chanting. We will also provide information on Shin Buddhism (Buddhism 101). This is open to the public and there is no fee. As always, any donation is appreciated to assist in maintaining this historical site. We are restocked and ready for weekend 2 of our yard sale. Doors open at 7:30am tomorrow, Aug 14th and Saturday Aug 15th. We have new collectibles, jewelry, housewares, baby gear, toys, holiday decor, clothes and more! See you this weekend!

Today! Our 81st annual Obon festival! We are getting the grounds set-up and are looking forward to celebrating with you. This event is rain or shine. The temple will be open during the event.

Our 81st annual Obon festival is tomorrow! We are monitoring the weather. If there are delays in programming due to a passing storm we will update here. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow.

1 week away from our 81st annual Obon Festival! We hope you will join us on July 18th. The event begins at 4pm. Please bring a lawn chair or blanket so you can sit and enjoy the community and taiko performances. All are welcome to join in the dancing! We look forward to seeing you at Obon!

Our last Obon dance practice is tonight, July 8th at 6pm. Join the Seabrook Minyo Dance Group to learn the dances for our Obon festival on July 18th. We hope to see you tonight and at the festival next week.

Come learn the dances for Obon with the Seabrook Minyo Dance Group. Dance practice Sunday, June 28th at 1pm and Wednesday, July 8th at 6pm at the Temple. No experience needed. All are welcome to learn the dances.
