Haven’t you always heard people complain about getting old and how their bodies are falling apart? Recently, I’m turning out to be one of those people. My goodness, things just don’t work as well as they used to. My eyes, for example. It wasn’t that long ago that I didn’t even know what a “floater” was, much less be bothered by them CONSTANTLY! They say, “Getting old isn’t for sissies”, and boy is that true! Of course, eye issues aren’t just about being old. Lots of people have problems with their sight. Not being able to see clearly or not being able to see at all is a huge challenge for many. Did you know that one of the reasons horses wear blinders is that limiting their vision can help them focus on the task at hand. Limiting distractions. Ok, I get that. But when the notes on the music page are fuzzy, I get crabby.
Did Jesus have to deal with “floaters” or cataracts? I don’t think there are scriptures where Jesus is telling John to be sure and make him an eye appointment for next week. But Jesus did give sight to the blind and Jesus did see things that no one else did. In fact, Jesus saw a lot. He saw the people that no one else saw, the poor, the marginalized, the weak. He also saw people, not for who they were, but who they could become. He saw the woman at the well and knew she was more than her sins. He knew Matthew could follow God and not money. He saw that Peter would deny him but also that he would build the church. Jesus could see the truth, the woman who gave away her only coin or the woman who touched the hem of his garment and believed. And Jesus saw love. Wouldn’t the world be amazing if we all saw with the eyes of Jesus. Yes, my youth, and my 20/20 vision maybe gone, my old eyes are a bit better about “seeing” than they probably were in my younger years. Slowing down causes me to look around a bit more, focus on individual things, maybe a wee bit wiser. As we work to become better Christ followers, let us pray for God to be more like Jesus, to love more and judge less. To see with eyes of caring, forgiving, and grace.
