As we continue our DNA sermon series, we’ve been digging deep into the foundational stories that shape our faith, our values, and our community. But to truly understand our spiritual DNA, we have to look at some of the more difficult chapters, too.
This Sunday, we would be remiss if we did not share the powerful story of Cain and Abel – a story of brotherly love and the consequences of violence.
No matter where you are on your faith journey, there is a place for you here to listen, reflect, and grow together.

Haven’t you always heard people complain about getting old and how their bodies are falling apart? Recently, I’m turning out to be one of those people. My goodness, things just don’t work as well as they used to. My eyes, for example. It wasn’t that long ago that I didn’t even know what a “floater” was, much less be bothered by them CONSTANTLY! They say, “Getting old isn’t for sissies”, and boy is that true! Of course, eye issues aren’t just about being old. Lots of people have problems with their sight. Not being able to see clearly or not being able to see at all is a huge challenge for many. Did you know that one of the reasons horses wear blinders is that limiting their vision can help them focus on the task at hand. Limiting distractions. Ok, I get that. But when the notes on the music page are fuzzy, I get crabby.
Did Jesus have to deal with “floaters” or cataracts? I don’t think there are scriptures where Jesus is telling John to be sure and make him an eye appointment for next week. But Jesus did give sight to the blind and Jesus did see things that no one else did. In fact, Jesus saw a lot. He saw the people that no one else saw, the poor, the marginalized, the weak. He also saw people, not for who they were, but who they could become. He saw the woman at the well and knew she was more than her sins. He knew Matthew could follow God and not money. He saw that Peter would deny him but also that he would build the church. Jesus could see the truth, the woman who gave away her only coin or the woman who touched the hem of his garment and believed. And Jesus saw love. Wouldn’t the world be amazing if we all saw with the eyes of Jesus. Yes, my youth, and my 20/20 vision maybe gone, my old eyes are a bit better about “seeing” than they probably were in my younger years. Slowing down causes me to look around a bit more, focus on individual things, maybe a wee bit wiser. As we work to become better Christ followers, let us pray for God to be more like Jesus, to love more and judge less. To see with eyes of caring, forgiving, and grace.

🍬 🍬 WE NEED HI-CHEWS! 🍬 🍬

Arlington UMC is marching in the Fourth of July Parade, and we have a very important mission: being the float that throws the best candy!

To make that happen, we need your help! We are collecting Hi-Chews to toss to the crowd. Why Hi-Chews? Because they are delicious, they don't melt instantly in the July heat, and let’s be honest, everyone loves them.

📍 How You Can Help:
What to buy: Bags of individually wrapped Hi-Chews (any flavor!).

Where to drop them off: Look for the designated collection bucket in the Great Hall.

When: Drop them off anytime between now and June 28th!

Let’s stock up and bring some serious joy to our community this Independence Day. Thank you for your generosity! 🇺🇸✨

Just a few more days and it will be Sunday once again. The first Sunday in June usually means the same thing every year here in the St. Louis area…the pastor is off attending Annual Conference and someone is needed to fill in while they are away. And it’s true once again. The fun part for me is, the pastor I started working for, who no longer must attend the conference, is the pastor I will work for again on Sunday morning. As I prepared the bulletin and thought about the choices the pastor made for hymns this week, I looked up the history of “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise,” which will be our first hymn on Sunday morning. A fun fact: not every hymn is in every hymnal. And different denominations have their own hymnals with the United Methodist church being no different. But “Immortal, Invisible,” shows up in 238 hymnals including the Baptist hymnal, the Catholic Book of Worship III, and the Irish Presbyterian Hymnbook. Our hymnal is set up in a way that you can find hymns by their name, their first lines, their topic or category, even by the name of their tune. Most of the time, the words are written separately from the music. Sometimes with years separating the two, with no connection to writer and composer. Our hymn tune is a Welsh melody, arranged and published by John Roberts, while the words are a poem written by Walter Chalmers Smith in 1867. Smith was a minister of the Free church of Scotland and while there was no tragic fire, no terribly sad event, or miraculous happening that caused him to write these words, they are beautiful. I hope that you find yourself listening to or participating in a worship service this Sunday and that you “praise the great name of God” and that you find “fountains of goodness and love.”

If you have ever taken a science class you have probably heard of(deoxyribonucleic acid) also known as DNA, which contains our basic genetic make up. At a cellular level DNA acts as a sort of blueprint for how we grow. Every individual alive today has DNA passed down from generation to generation from biological ancestors. Our ancestors shared their genetics with us but they have also shared their stories. Some stories, like those we find in scripture, shape our imagination and our understanding of God just like DNA shapes our bodies. Last Sunday, was the beginning of a new sermon series called “It's Our DNA” in which we discuss important stories from the book of Genesis. I hope you can join us! Pastor Dan talked about the very beginning and creation, and how this story has been used to help shape our understanding of the world and how everything came to be.

This Sunday, join Pastor Keith as we will talk about Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden!

Whether joining in person or online, we look forward to having you all in church!
