Here is the Opening Prayer offered at our Trinity Sunday service, May 26, 2024:
ALMIGHTY AND EVERLASTING GOD, YOU HAVE REVEALED YOURSELF IN A VARIETY OF WAYS TO HUMANKIND THROUGH OUR HISTORY. YOU ARE OUR HEAVENLY PARENT. YOU ARE OUR SAVIOR AS YOU CAME TO US IN JESUS CHRIST. YOU ARE HERE WITH US IN THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

TRIUNE GOD, HOW MAJESTIC IS YOUR NAME IN ALL THE EARTH! COME AMONG NOW AS YOU HAVE BEFORE. COME AMONG US, AS IN CREATION, TO STAMP YOUR IMAGE ON ALL YOUR CREATURES. COME AMONG, AS IN CHRIST, TO OFFER LOVE TO YOUR CREATURES GONE WRONG. COME AMONG US, AS AT PENTECOST, TO BREATHE YOUR BLESSINGS UPON YOUR CREATURES UNITED IN COMMUNITY, THAT WE MIGHT BE ENCOURAGED BY EACH OTHER’S FAITH.

THRICE HOLY GOD, WE HAVE COME INTO THIS PLACE IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS. HEAR US IN YOUR HOUSE! WHATEVER OUR AGE, OR RACE, OR HOMELAND, OR CLASS, OR GENDER, OR INTELLIGENCE, OR ABILITY, OR CREED, YOU HAVE PROMISED TO SHOW US LOVE: TO HEAL US WHEN WE ARE WOUNDED, TO PROTECT US WHEN WE ARE VULNERABLE, TO COME TO US WHEN WE ARE ALONE. WE STAND IN NEED OF YOUR STEADFAST LOVE; DO NOT DISAPPOINT US!

GOD OF MERCY AND COMPASSION, WE ASK THAT YOU FORGIVE OUR SINS AND THAT YOU HEAL OUR DISEASES. SAVE US FROM DESTRUCTION. WE REPENT OF OUR STUBBORNNESS AND OUR SELF-CENTEREDNESS. WE KNOW THAT WE HAVE NOT ALWAYS BEEN DEVOTED CHILDREN. WE HAVE STRAYED FROM THE FOLD AND WANDERED AWAY FROM YOUR CARE AND PROTECTION. WE ARE SORRY. BY YOUR HOLY SPIRIT, HELP US TO YIELD OURSELVES MORE FULLY TO YOUR WILL. KEEP US IN YOUR PRESENCE THAT WE MIGHT SERVE AND WITNESS IN THE WORLD. SHOW US HOW TO BE HOLY, AND HOW TO LIVE OUR LIVES IN ACCORDANCE WITH YOUR WILL AND YOUR WAY.

GOD OF LOVE, WE PRAY THAT WHEN WE LEAVE THIS PLACE THIS MORNING, WE MAY GO AWAY RENEWED AND REFRESHED AND MORE DETERMINED TO BE YOUR LOVING SONS AND DAUGHTERS.

WE ASK ALL THIS IN THE NAME OF JESUS THE CHRIST, OUR ELDER SIBLING, WHO TAUGHT US TO PRAY, SAYING: OUR FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN, HALLOWED BE THY NAME. THY KINGDOM COME. THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN. GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS. AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION, BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL. FOR THINE IS THE KINGDOM AND THE POWER AND THE GLORY FOREVER. AMEN.”

We were very pleased to welcome back to worship and to our pulpit the Rev. Dorothy Peebles-Pelley who was our preacher on May 1,2022. Dorothy has had a long and rich association with the First Baptist Church of Bridgeport. She was baptized here in 1958 by the Rev. Dr. Albert Sheckells having been part of the congregation for a long period. (Dr. Sheckells’ son, Steve in up State New York, is a regular attendee of our worship via Facebook!)
Dorothy’s grandmother, Mrs. Fred Langhammer, and her beloved mother, Mrs. Anita Peebles, were faithful members of this congregation. Both Dorothy and her brother, Gary Peebles, served in a variety of capacities here at First Baptist, including as Moderator!!
Pastor Scott was the preacher at the funeral service last August for Dorothy’s late husband, Jim.
Here is a brief bio by Dorothy herself: “I grew up here at First Baptist where my family worshiped. In college I studied to be a graphic artist. I worked at Yale New Haven Hospital as Patient Information Director in charge of publications. There I spent several years as part of a Healing Circle studying the validity of Faith Healing. Working and studying with the School of Divinity, School of Medicine and other departments to determine if faith healing could be taught to and used by nurses and doctors. While studying in the School of Divinity I learned about preaching, counseling, and following God's will. I began preaching here at First Baptist as a lay preacher. I was ordained in 2003. I served as the Moderator here. Later became Pastor of the Riverside Community Church in Oxford Connecticut until I retired. I have an Outreach Ministry working with people who are not connected to a church but want spiritual experiences in their lives. I also do pulpit supply, counseling, weddings, funerals and other events. I am currently the Chaplain of the Oxford Grange number 194. Although in my heart I am a Baptist, I currently attend and serve on the vestry of an Episcopal Church in Oxford Connecticut.”
