Concluding a life rich in family, friends, and countless blessings, Cheryl Jane Harms of Bridgeport, NE passed away on January 3, 2026 at the age of 77. She was an endlessly caring and giving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, teacher, volunteer, and friend, and she will be fondly remembered and missed by so many.
All are welcome to celebrate Cheryl’s story on the morning of Friday, January 9, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport. A gathering for viewing and fellowship will begin at 9:00 AM, with services led by Rev. Jonathan Berosek at 10:00 AM. Committal will be held at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery and followed by lunch in the church Fellowship Hall. Flowers are welcome and may be ordered through The Simple Co. in Bridgeport at 308.262.1621. Memorials honoring Cheryl may be made to her family and will be designated at a later time. Online condolences may be made by viewing Cheryl’s memorial page at www.bridgmanfuneralhome.com. Bridgman Family Funeral Home in Bridgeport is entrusted with arrangements.
Cheryl was born in Alliance, NE on December 21, 1948, to William (Bill) and Beverly Benda of Hemingford. As a farm girl, she especially enjoyed raising and showing horses for 4-H. She then pursued and earned a bachelor’s in education at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. There, she fell in love with Edwin Harms of Ragan, NE, who was studying Soil and Water Conservation. After both graduated in 1971, they married in May of 1972 at Hemingford United Methodist Church and lived in Lincoln, Fremont, and then Columbus. Cheryl taught third-grade elementary school in Elgin and Columbus, while also enjoying flower-gardening, family gatherings, and moviegoing with Ed. She then flourished as a full-time parent once their son, Eric, was born in 1975.
The young family moved to rural Bridgeport in 1979, where Cheryl continued to enjoy her flowers, cooking and baking, serving as a church deacon, and substitute-teaching at various local schools. She and Ed founded and led a local 4-H Club for many years. 1986 brought the arrival of their daughter, Kayla, in whom Cheryl’s love of horses continued, also through 4-H.
Cheryl’s pride and joy was always in her family, and she delighted in every gathering and event, no matter how small or routine. Her memory lives on in her husband Edwin Harms; son Eric Harms and daughter-in-law Æmber Fish of Boulder, CO; daughter Kayla, son-in-law Justin, and grandchildren Mason, Peyton, and Kennedi Cox of Prague, NE; sister-in-law Gina Benda of Alliance, NE; sister Jody and brother-in-law Doug Osler of North Platte, NE; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.

Family and close friends are invited to her burial at Redington Cemetery at 10:00 AM and everyone is invited to her funeral at First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport at 11:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Bridgeport, NE. Fond memories and condolences may be made by viewing Virginia’s memorial page at www.bridgmanfuneralhome.com. Bridgman Funeral Home is assisting the family with the services.
Virginia was born on August 30,1935 in North Platte, Nebraska to Carl and Lucille (Hard) Christensen. They lived in southern Garden County at the time. When Virginia was a young girl, she and her parents moved to a farm South of Bridgeport. As an only child, she spent much of her younger years with her grandparents who lived on the same property. She attended school in Bridgeport and graduated in 1952. Virginia married Calvin Coulter in 1951 and they lived in Lincoln, NE until Calvin graduated law school and they moved back to Western Nebraska.
Calvin and Virginia lived on the Coulter Ranch near Redington for 62 years. They raised six children on the ranch and created an inviting atmosphere for their grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends, and family to spend time together. Calvin and Virginia moved into Bridgeport in 2015, and Virigina remained there until moving to Heritage Estates in Gering in August 2025.
Virginia had many talents, and she was eager to share them with her family and friends. She shared her knowledge of sewing, cooking, and gardening. She was artistic and had a yearning to learn new things as she took different art and language classes after her children were grown. Virginia spent several years running a dress shop in Sidney, NE with her friend Helen Goltl.
Virginia was an avid gardener and kept a beautiful yard. She was known for her delicious meals and “famous” chocolate cake. Virginia loved to travel with Cal or friends and was a proud member of the Redington Valley Homemakers extension club. She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church in Bridgeport, serving as an elder, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School helper and as a member on various committees. She quietly lived out her devotion to God each day as her faith served as an anchor in her life.
Virginia is survived by her daughters Sheryll Coulter of Webster Groves, MO and Susan Coulter of Scottsbluff, NE, and sons Kenneth (Peggy) Coulter of Rural Gering, NE and Lewis (Susan) Coulter of Bridgeport, NE; sister-in-law Madelyn Anderson of Broadwater, NE and brother-in-law Ben Younglove of Lafayette, CO; grandchildren David (Sydney) Lienemann of Albuquerque, NM, Laura (Chris) Ochoa of Downers Grove, IL., Scott Biery of Scottsbluff, NE, Stephanie (Mike) McConnell of North Platte, NE, Jodi Smith (Kevin Hansen) of Cheyenne, WY, Danielle (Ryan) Buffington of Omaha, NE, Costa Lapaseotes of Bridgeport, NE, Nicole (Jacob) Dean of Bridgeport, NE, Cassie Lapaseotes of Bridgeport, NE, Ryan Blue of Cheyenne, WY and Rachael Blue of Bridgeport, NE; 12 great-grandchildren; and 5 great great-grandchildren.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents Carl and Lucille Christensen and stepfather Leo Dean, in-laws Bern and Esther Coulter, husband Calvin Coulter, daughters Robin Coulter Lapaseotes and Kris Coulter, great-grandson Greysen Dean, brother-in-law Harold Anderson and sister-in-law Nancy Myers.
