So many different gatherings, both fun and educational, took place within the walls of our synagogue and beyond this past week.

From our Elul Circle and Micah-Nections' Ha Ha Havdallah to Shabbat with Eastside Tribe and JLAB’s Faculty Orientation, each gathering offered another opportunity to learn, laugh, reflect, and connect.

Jewish life, at its core, is about the community and love we share with one another. Thank you to everyone who continues to make Congregation Micah a thriving, welcoming, and meaningful community for all.

Mazel tov to Maddie Hensley on completing her conversion to Judaism!

During Shabbat services last Friday, Maddie shared a reflection on one of the qualities that drew her to Jewish life: our tradition of questioning, debating, and wrestling with ideas. Her words beautifully captured the intellectual curiosity at the heart of Judaism and what it means to be part of a people who continue to learn from our texts, traditions, and one another.

We are so happy to celebrate this meaningful milestone with Maddie and to welcome her fully into the Jewish people and the Congregation Micah community. Mazel tov, Maddie!

Volunteering at Micah takes many forms, and we’re fortunate to have volunteers like the extraordinary Jim Gilmore.

This week, we, and mostly Jim, finished transforming an old lectern into a new audio console for our sanctuary. Jim has contributed countless hours not only to this project, but also to many others throughout Micah.

Jim is one of many dedicated volunteers whose time and talents help our community thrive. Thank you, Jim, and thank you to all the volunteers who make Congregation Micah such a special place!

Last Friday, our community gathered for Shabbat in the Round, a special service held in our social hall where we could face one another, lift our voices together, and share in song and prayer as one community.

The evening was made even more meaningful by the musical talents of Ada Pasternak, Cameron Gainer, John Sevier, and Krystina Roman, who filled the room with energy, warmth, and joy. We were also honored to welcome Vanderbilt Divinity School Dean Yolanda Pierce for a thoughtful and engaging discussion led by our Education Director, Julie Greenberg.

From music and worship to conversation and reflection, the evening was a beautiful reminder of the power of being together, face to face, heart to heart, and surrounded by community. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this Shabbat such an extraordinary experience of connection and togetherness.

This Friday, Vanderbilt Divinity School's Dean Yolanda Pierce will help us welcome the first Shabbat of Elul by returning to the theological themes of her childhood in conversation with Education Director Julie Greenberg.

Sharing stories from her book, In My Grandmother's House, Dean Pierce will highlight her journey toward becoming the inspiring womanist pastor, teacher, and mother that she is today. Building on shared Jewish texts and embracing the idea of holy rest, this special Shabbat in the Round will return us all, together, to the promise of interfaith partnership through stories of both struggle and strength.

Yesterday, Micah was proud to host the second gathering in the four-part Faith250 series, commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.

Together, participants from a range of religious and political backgrounds explored some of the nation’s foundational texts, exchanged perspectives, and engaged in meaningful conversation across differences.

We were delighted to host yesterday’s JLAB Religious School Teen Town Hall!

Parents and teens came to learn about the upcoming school year, share feedback, and create art. Our students transformed a range of Jewish themes into colorful, thoughtful works of art while sharing ideas, building friendships, and enjoying time together. It was wonderful to see everyone expressing their Jewish identities in such personal and imaginative ways.

Yesterday, our congregants visited Vanderbilt University for a special guided tour of the Mary and Harry Zimmerman Judaica Collection. From historic Hebrew texts and rare prints to books and journals spanning generations, each item offered a fascinating glimpse into the stories, scholarship, and traditions preserved within the collection.
