In his painting "What is truth?", Russian artist Nicholas Ge (1890) captures the moment Pontius Pilate interrogates Jesus before He is crucified. Pilate's question implies that he doesn't think truth can be absolute and therefore must be relative. Pilate questions the existence of absolute truth in the presence of the One who is Himself the Way, the Truth and the Life. Pilate decided that his own version of truth was the absolute one. Ge's painting is compelling because he positions Jesus in the background while Pilate overshadows Him. Pilate goes on to wash his hands of the matter, moving on to the next thing on his daily calendar, while Jesus is taken to Calvary to bear the punishment for all our sins. And that is the truth that makes today a truly Good Friday.
