Independence Baptist Church

Independence Baptist Church Welcome to our page. Officially named Independence First Baptist Church, the church today simply describes itself as Independence Baptist Church.

As you browse our worship videos, we pray you will join us for one of our services during the week:

Sunday Morning Bible Study: 9:45
Sunday Worship: 11:00
Wednesday Meal: First Wed of the month
Wednesday Bible Study: 6:30 The church was begun in 1839 and is the oldest continuously serving Baptist church in Texas. The church has been called the “Mother Church” of Texas Baptist. Baylor University a

nd the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor began here; Sam Houston was saved and baptized in this church and remained a member until his death; the first Baptist association (Union Baptist Association) began here as did the Independence association; this church sent the first Baptist missionaries to Brazil, and the first missionary to the German people of Texas. In 2014 the church celebrated 175 years since this church began to serving faithfully the people of Washington County, Texas and the world. Today the church remains a vibrant and serving church. The old chapel now houses the only museum maintained by the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The museum was remodeled in 2014 and is today a modern museum. The old chapel has been remodeled to return it to its 1872 appearance. In 2007 the members built a new facility across the road from the old chapel which was debt free when they moved in. We are a church made up of folks from many different backgrounds; religiously, ethnically, and generationally. We are not a cowboy church-but we have a lot of cowboys here. Nor are we a city church-but we have a lot of city folks here as well. Our folks are farmers, cowboys, business owners, and professors. We are young families and retired folks and everything in between. The Word of God is our only creed. Love is our hallmark and grace (both received and given) our hope and joy. We are imperfect people serving a perfect God and seeking to become more like Him each day.

On November 19, 1854, Sam Houston was baptized in Rocky Creek, near Independence, TX, where he, Margaret, and her mother were members of the Independence Baptist Church.

Margaret had vowed to get Sam baptized, and she was successful. Even she, typically quiet, got very excited and “shouted a little.” Sam was baptized by Rufus Burleson, the future president of Baylor University.

As the story goes, a friend later told Houston that “I hear your sins were washed away.” In response, Houston said “if they were all washed away, the Lord help the fish down below.”
