There is no agenda. No program to get through. No pressure to be anyone other than exactly who you are.

Just a table. A meal. And the kind of people who have learned โ€” usually through enough years and enough hard seasons โ€” that being present with one another is one of the most worthwhile things you can do with an afternoon.

That's Daylighters. And if you've never been, we want you to know: there is a chair with your name on it. Literally and figuratively. Come pull up a seat and let us introduce you to some of the most faithful, interesting, warm-hearted people in Kitsap County.

Daylighters Luncheon Every 3rd Wednesday at 12:00 PM City Chapel of Bremerton (Sign up on the website or app)

No explanation required. Just come.

Agency โ€” the belief that you have the capacity to make a difference, to take a step, to move toward what matters โ€” is one of the three pillars of hope. And one of the greatest threats to agency is fear. Fear of failure. Fear of rejection. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear that your effort won't be enough, that the obstacles are too large, that you're not qualified for the thing you feel called to.

Paul names the source of that fear directly: it is not from God. The spirit you have been given is the opposite โ€” power, love, and a sound mind. Power to act. Love that displaces the fear of what others think. A clear, grounded, unfrantic mind that can assess a situation and move.

Whatever you have been holding back from โ€” the conversation you've been putting off, the step of faith you've been circling, the place where you know you're supposed to show up but haven't โ€” this is your word for today. The fear is real. But it is not the loudest voice in the room. And it is not the one with authority over your life.

Peter wrote this to people who were minorities in their culture โ€” outsiders, misunderstood, sometimes accused of things they hadn't done. And his counsel wasn't to argue louder or defend themselves more aggressively. It was simpler and harder than that: live well. Let the quality of your life be the argument.

There is something about this that speaks directly to our moment. The credibility of faith is not primarily won or lost in debates โ€” it's won or lost in neighborhoods. In workplaces. In the way you treat people who can do nothing for you. In whether your word means what you say it means. In whether the people who know you best โ€” who see you on a Tuesday, not just a Sunday โ€” would say you are the same person in both places.

Faithful presence isn't primarily a strategy. It's a character. And character, formed over time, lived out in ordinary places, is still one of the most compelling things a human life can produce. You don't have to win every argument. You just have to live in a way that raises the question.

Tonight we're celebrating some incredible graduates who have ran their high school race with faith, choosing to honor God throughout their high school journey โ€” and who are stepping into their next chapter trusting Him every step of the way. Come cheer them on, pray over them, and celebrate what God has done. Don't miss it! Tonight, 5pm at City Chapel of Bremerton. Pastor Jonathan Morris from Gracepoint Church will be our keynote speaker.

One of the most consistent findings in hope research is that hopeful people think differently about obstacles. Where low-hope individuals see a blocked path and stop, high-hope individuals ask: what's another way? They are not naive about difficulty โ€” they simply refuse to let one closed door become the end of the story. They keep looking for pathways.

That capacity โ€” what researchers call pathways thinking โ€” is not just a personality trait. It's a practiced orientation toward the future. And it maps almost exactly onto what Scripture describes as trust. Not the absence of obstacles. Not the guarantee that the first path will work. But the deep, settled confidence that the one who goes before you is capable of making a way where you cannot see one.

Faithful presence in a complicated world requires this. The path forward is rarely straight or obvious. What it requires is the willingness to keep moving, keep asking, keep trusting โ€” and the belief that the God who calls you to show up in this world is also the God who will show you how.

Jars of clay were the most common, most ordinary containers in the ancient world. Cheap. Breakable. Nothing remarkable about them. Paul uses them as the image for the people God has chosen to carry his presence into the world. Not golden vessels. Not ornate containers. Ordinary ones.

Which means God has never been confused about who He is working with. He has always known you were fragile, limited, prone to cracks, and sometimes chipped around the edges. That was never a disqualifier. It was, apparently, the point โ€” so that when something good comes out of your life, nobody looks at the jar and says "well, of course." They look at what's inside it.

You don't have to be extraordinary to be faithfully present. You don't have to be the most gifted, the most articulate, the most put-together person in the room. You just have to show up โ€” cracks and all โ€” and trust that what you carry is bigger than the container.

"For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." โ€” Ephesians 2:10

Research on human flourishing consistently points to the same finding: people who have a clear sense of purpose โ€” who believe their life is moving toward something meaningful โ€” experience more resilience, more wellbeing, and more capacity to endure difficulty. Hope, in this framework, is not wishful thinking. It is a cognitive and motivational structure built on three things: a goal worth pursuing, a pathway to get there, and the agency โ€” the belief โ€” that you can actually move.

Scripture has been saying something like this for a long time. You were made for good works. Not to earn anything โ€” that's not the claim. But because purposeful, others-oriented action is woven into what it means to be human. You were designed for contribution. For presence. For showing up in the specific places of your life and doing something that matters there.

The question worth asking is not whether you have a purpose. You do. The question is whether you're living like you believe it. What is one good thing โ€” one specific, concrete act of faithful presence โ€” that you could do this week in the world you're already in?
