"The righteous flourish like the palm tree... They still bear fruit in old age." — Psalm 92:12, 14

Joy isn't a young person's game — Scripture says it deepens the longer you walk with God. Daylighters is our monthly gathering for seniors to eat well, laugh often, and be reminded that a long life with God is still bearing fruit, not just looking back on it.

Come hungry, come with a story to tell, and come ready to be poured into by people who've walked with Jesus longer than most of us have been alive.

Daylighters meets the third Wednesday of every month (that's the 16th this month) at 12pm, at City Chapel of Bremerton. RSVP on the website.

"These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full." — John 15:11

Jesus said this the same night He talked about laying down His life for His friends. His joy wasn't circumstantial — the cross was hours away — and He offers to share that very joy with anyone who stays connected to Him, the same way a branch stays connected to a vine.

If your joy has been running on empty, Jesus isn't handing you advice on how to feel better. He's offering His own joy, full and complete, freely given to anyone who comes to Him.

"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds." — James 1:2-4

This is one of the strangest commands in Scripture, and James knows it. He's not asking you to pretend the trial doesn't hurt. He's asking you to notice what the trial is producing — a perseverance that comfort could never build, and a maturity that only comes out the far side of something hard.

If you're in a season right now that has nothing to do with your own choices — a diagnosis, a layoff, a wait with no end date — this isn't a call to smile through it. It's an invitation to watch for what's being built in you that ease alone never could.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace..." — Galatians 5:22-23

Paul lists joy right after love because they grow in the same soil. Just a few verses earlier, he'd named the "works of the flesh" — things people manufacture, perform, and eventually burn out trying to maintain. Fruit is different. Nobody manufactures fruit. A branch connected to the vine simply produces it, season after season, without straining.

So if your joy feels thin lately, the answer probably isn't trying harder to feel joyful. It's staying close to the Vine and trusting the fruit to come.

You don't manufacture the fruit of the Spirit. You stay connected to Christ, and the fruit comes.

"So God blessed the seventh day... Establish the work of our hands." — Genesis 2:3, Psalm 90:17

Before there was a single sinner to save, there was a Creator who worked, called His work good, and then rested — not out of exhaustion, but delight. That's the pattern we're made in: work isn't a curse to escape, and rest isn't a reward you have to earn. Both are gifts.

Whatever your labor looks like this year — a job, a job search, raising kids, caregiving, ministry no one sees — it isn't invisible to God. He's the kind of God who takes ordinary work and calls it worth establishing.

Whether you're clocking out today or the work never really stops, may the God who rested and delighted in His work do the same in yours.

CITY YOUTH IS BACK!

"Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example." — 1 Timothy 4:12

City Youth kicks back off on September 8, and here's the truth we want every student walking through that door to hear: you are not a holding pattern until you're old enough to matter. Paul told a young pastor to lead now, believe now, love now — not someday. That's the invitation for our students too.

Come expecting real conversations, real friendships, and a place where following Jesus while young isn't treated as a phase to wait out.

City Youth meets 6-8pm on Tuesdays at City Chapel, starting September 8. Dinner provided. All high school and middle school students welcome. Bring a friend!

"Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." — Nehemiah 8:9-10

The exiles had just heard the Law read aloud, some of them for the first time in their lives, and it undid them — they wept at how far they'd drifted. Ezra and the Levites didn't pile on more guilt. They redirected the people toward a feast, because grief wasn't the finish line God had in mind for that day. Joy was.

Notice what this joy wasn't: it wasn't something the people worked up to earn back God's favor. It was handed to them, already theirs, before they'd fixed a single thing.

What would change if you believed your joy wasn't something you had to work up, but something you get to receive?
