Nehemiah 4 opens with the work going well. The wall is rising, the gaps are closing, but then the trouble begins. Sanballat mocks, the enemies scheme, and Jerusalem finds itself surrounded on every side. But the most dangerous attack in this chapter is not the one outside the wall; it is the one within. Before long, the builders are saying the same thing as their enemies: there is too much rubble, and we cannot complete the task. The taunt from outside has become the confession within. That is the real battle of Nehemiah 4. Not just stones and swords, but whose voice God's people will believe when they are tired and worn down. Nehemiah does not answer with self-confidence, a pep talk, or bravado. He prays to the God of heaven and then acts: he sets a guard, arms the workers, and calls them to remember the Lord, because our God will fight for us.
Join us this Sunday as we continue our study through Nehemiah and learn how to keep building when the enemy's voice is ringing in our heads.
