Psalm 90
Philemon 9-10, 12-17
Gospel: Luke 14: 25-33

A Thought to Ponder:

William Barclay suggests these two truths within our Gospel passage today:

#1: It is possible to be a follower of Jesus without being a disciple; to be a camp-follower without being a soldier of one's country; to be a hanger-on in some great work without pulling one's weight.

Once someone was talking to a great scholar about a younger student. He said, "So and so tells me that he was one of your students." The teacher answered devastatingly, "He may have attended my lectures, but he was not one of my students."

#2: It is a Christian's first duty to count the cost of following Jesus. In every sphere in a person's life there is a call to count the cost.
In the Scottish marriage ceremony the minister says "Marriage is not to be entered upon lightly or unadvisedly, but thoughtfully, reverently, and in the fear of God." A marriage couple must count the cost.

It is so with the Christian way. But if someone is daunted by the high demands of Jesus, they must remember that they are not left to fulfill them alone. The Holy Spirit will walk with them every step of the way and be there to meet them when day is done.

Why celebrate Mary of Magdala?
Feast Day: July 22

Mary Magdalene was a first century Jewish woman who followed Jesus throughout his ministry. According to all four of the Gospels, she was the first person who saw the risen Christ, and was charged with preaching the Good News of the Resurrection to the other apostles. This earned her the title "Apostle to the Apostles." There is a strong tradition that when the Apostles departed from Jerusalem to preach to all the ends of the earth, Mary Magdalene also went with them. She went to Rome where she visited Emperor Tiberius (14-37 CE) and proclaimed to him Christ's Resurrection. According to legend, she brought him a red egg as a symbol of the Resurrection and new life, with the words: "Christ is Risen!"

A Thought to Ponder:

As long as a woman is required to be less than she should be, a man will be required to be more than he can be, to the detriment of both of them. Until the patriarchal system realizes the insufficiency of the principles of power upon which it is based, the disconnectedness of its bias for maleness from the real composition of the world, and its need for a spirituality that embraces otherness rather than excludes it, it can never become whole. It will continue to fall under the weight of having to carry a burden for which it is only half prepared. The real tragedy, of course, is that we will all suffer for the loss of it. More, underneath it all, spirituality itself will lead at best to half the image of God.

A Thought to Ponder:

There is such a thing as "the light." I have known it for years: It is the steady, steady awareness that what if going on in life is "right" for you-- no matter how bad it may feel at the time. I have known darkness aplenty, yes, but the light that came out of it is brighter than ever. As a result, I must spend my own life trying to bring it.

A Thought to Ponder:

In her book, Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now, poet laureate Maya Angelou tells of her memory of her grandmother who raised her in the little town of Stamps, Arkansas. She describes her as "a tall cinnamon-colored woman with a deep, soft voice," whose difficult life caused her to rely utterly on the power of God. Angelou envisioned Mamma "standing thousands of feet up in the air on nothing visible," when she would draw herself up to her full six feet, clasp her hands behind her back, look up into a distant sky, and declare, "I will step out on the word of God." Maya continues, "She would look up as if she could will herself into the heavens, and tell her family in particular and the world in general, 'I will step out on the world of God.'" "Immediately," Angelou recalls, "I could see her flung into space, moons at her feet and stars at her head, comets swirling around her. Naturally it wasn't difficult for me to have faith. I grew up knowing that the word of God has power."

Thought to Ponder:
The peace Jesus bestows... issues from the union Jesus enjoys with God, a union we are now invited to share. It is a peace in which we can rest even while in the throes of life's struggles. Jesus bequeaths his peace to us just after he has assured us that God will send the Spirit to be with us in his absence. This is the greatest of his farewell gifts.

A Thought to Ponder:

A Time to Heal is not one message but two: At the first level, its clear sense is not only that there is a time in every life for a person to care about the sufferings of other people, but that there is some obligation to abate them. On the other hand, it is equally clear that the dictum could also mean that there's a period of time in every human life when the process of being healed, of coming beyond my own woundedness, may itself be life's greatest project.
