We are newly-weds and empty-nesters, toddlers and elders, do

ubters and the devout. We are teachers and students. We are the non-Jewish partners and the newcomers to Judaism; we're those revisiting the comfort of our childhood rituals and those searching for something that might have been missing since then. We welcome our guests and celebrate our simchas, we visit our sick and we mourn with our bereaved, we stand with the State of Israel and we care for our planet. Tomorrow we celebrate the new moon of Elul, completing our passage through the portal of grief opened by Tisha B'Av. We begin the powerful work of tshuvah-atonement, and return to balance, peace and right relationship with ourselves, friends and family, Spirit and community. May our tender and open hearts bring us to ever higher levels of compassion, empathy and healing, leading us to ever more joy, ease and wholeness.

Tisha B'Av comes during the hottest time of the summer, when the land of Israel is parched and dry. While remembering the destruction of the first and second temples in Jerusalem and the suffering of our people, we are also provided the opportunity to acknowledge the suffering of all peoples and the Earth itself.

Shabbat Shalom

How good it is to let go gently
To cease our frantic planning and creating
Our endless striving toward places
We do not need to be.

How joyful it is to step through
a portal in time
Arrive at the shore of eternity.
Where beginning and ending merge
Yesterday and tomorrow become only today.

Where Shehinah, the Divine Presence,
Shelters us beneath her wings
Offering us the sacred gifts
Of silence and rest.

In this place we return
To the day of our creation,
To the awe and wonder of being
As we were created to be.

Blessed are you, Source of Life,

Shabbat Shalom

Sky turning from blue to ruby to sapphire,
at last the moment has arrived,
this is the turning point,
outside, the day turns to night and
within, within, our souls turn to
embrace the sweetness that is Shabbat.
I light the Shabbat candles
and ignite the fire of my soul.
I say the bracha
and hear the voice within respond.
I feel my soul gates open
to let the Sabbath in.
And the darkness of evening
becomes the light of Shabbat,
and from the inner stillness,
my soul begins to dance.

SHEMOT SHELAH KIRTAN SHABBAT

Shemot Shelah is a Jewish kirtan band offering Hebrew call-and-response chanting with feminine and non-binary names for the Divine. Call-and-response chants allow for anyone to participate, regardless of background or familiarity with Hebrew. Chant sheets are prepared in advance with Hebrew, transliterated Hebrew, and English translations to ensure that all feel empowered to sing.
