LEADERS IN LITURGY: PLEASE CONSIDER SERVING!

The word “liturgy” means “work of the people.” It is a beautiful thing for many people to be involved in the leading of worship, and it can also be very meaningful for those who participate. If you haven’t tried serving in a specific role in our Sunday worship services, please consider if you would like to serve in one or more of the roles listed below. All the roles listed below are scheduled on a rotating basis approximately every 6 weeks, according to your availability. Training will be provided!
Ushers
Ushering is one of the most significant hospitality roles in the church, for they are the first representatives of our church to welcome people. Ushers need to arrive early and greet people as they come through the doors, handing our bulletins and helping to orient people to restrooms, childcare, etc. Ushers also help with the offering and bringing up elements for the Eucharist.
Lay Assistant
Lay Assistants carry the cross at the beginning of the procession and assist the deacon in setting the altar and distributing Communion. At the 8 am service, the Lay Assistant also acts as the reader.
Readers
At the 10:15 am service, readers read one or two of the scripture lessons appointed for the week as well as help with the offering.
Prayer Leaders/Intercessors
Intercessors lead the Prayers of the People during the 8am or 10:15am service.
Acolytes
Acolytes are young people who assist in worship by lighting the candles, leading the procession and (sometimes) helping to serve grape juice at Holy Communion. Anyone ages 8 and above are invited to be acolytes.

COMPLINE SERVICES RESUME MONTHLY
BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 10
After a summer break, we will be resuming our monthly Choral Compline services. These services, which last 20-25 minutes, will be 7:30pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month (same schedule as last year) starting Sept. 10. Compline is a service of the Divine Office that takes place at the end of the day before going to bed. The entire service will be sung by the choir, led by our Director of Music Keane Southard, mostly in plainchant but also with some choral settings, all in candlelight. INTERESTED IN JOINING THE CHOIR?
CHOIR RETREAT THIS SATURDAY
It's late August, which means it won't be long until the St. Michael's choir resumes again after Labor Day, when our summer break ends. We are always looking for new choir members. You need not be a polished or trained singer, although having some experience singing in a choir and/or some familiarity with reading music is of course helpful.
You can certainly come and sit in on rehearsals until you feel comfortable committing to singing with the choir during Sunday services. We return to rehearsing beginning with our choir retreat this Saturday, September 12, from 9:30-3:30 at the church, and regular Sunday rehearsals begin the next day, at 8:45 AM before the 10:15 AM service. KIDS & YOUTH CHRISTIAN FORMATION KICK-OFF
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 9:30–10 AM, THE RECTORY YARD
Back to school means back to formation programs for children and youth at St. Michael’s. Our hope is that every child experience God’s love and know how precious they are to God and to us in the church! On Sunday, September 13, please come at 9:30 for games and food, to register for Sunday School, and to get inspired for this new year in the life of our church. At 10 AM, kids will be invited to the church to begin their new classes.
Offerings for Children and Youth:
Nursery Care (ages 0–3, every Sunday) is open beginning at 10 am on Sundays. Childcare is provided by our two lovely Nursery helpers. You are welcome to have your kids stay in the nursery throughout the 10:15 am service or pick them up at The Peace (middle of the service) to share Holy Communion.
Godly Play (ages 3–9) meets Sundays at 10:10 am during the first half of the 10:15 am worship service. Godly Play is a Montessori-inspired Christian formation program based on the recognition that children have an innate sense of the presence of God. The Godly Play approach teaches classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s authentic experience of God so it can contribute to the creative life of the child and the world. Children then join their parents during the Peace so that they may participate in Holy Communion with the rest of the congregation.
St. Michael’s Youth Group (for youth 7th–12th Grade) will be held on the First Sunday of each month beginning at 10:10. The Youth Group will be learning, serving, cooking, going on field trips and exploring different forms of spirituality. Please come for the first gathering on September 13 in the Meeting Room!
Youth Confirmation Class Information Session: There will be an information session for kids and parents on the possibility of a Youth Confirmation Class on Sunday, September 24 from 12- 1pm in the Meeting Room with Mary Lindquist. The information session is a chance to learn more about what Confirmation preparation involves as well as discern what time structure will work best for students.

NEW AGING GROUP: A ZOOM OPPORTUNITY
As I grow older I find that more and more of my conversations revolve around aging. This has been a bit of a surprise as I’ve always been busy doing something, usually trying to help people accomplish something. Now my thoughts are often not directed by goals, projects or outcomes but by the questions that float up from times past. Some are troubling, some are pleasing, most are worth reflecting on.
I’m offering an opportunity for a Zoom based Aging group to start this fall. We may have some participants from Northern Vermont. We can decide the time and frequency when we’re all signed up. We’ll be using ‘Aging with Wisdom and Grace’ by Wilkie and Noreen Au, and ’The Oxford Book of Aging’, a compendium of fascinating selections on aging across time and cultures.

A gathering for creation sponsored by Vermont Interfaith Power & Light, hosted by St. Michael’s, Saturday, September 19, 10am-1pm.
Vermont Interfaith Power & Light is inviting faith communities from around our region to come to St. Michael’s for a morning of “imagining the possible” in regard to how faith communities can navigate the current climate crisis. Leaders from St. Michael’s will be presenting the work we have done through our Building Hope for the Earth initiative, as well as discussing our intentions for the future. COFFEE HOUR HOSTS NEEDED:
A SIMPLE MINISTRY OF HOSPITALITY
Many of us love to extend our time of worship with fellowship over light refreshments, and we see Coffee Hour as an important part of our ministry here. There are very few people signed up to serve as hosts in the coming weeks and months, and without the help of willing volunteers, the hospitality part of that time won’t be possible. Don’t let financial concerns limit your willingness to sign up: St. Michael’s provides reimbursement for those who need it, along with training for new hosts. Please sign up in the Common Room or connect with Rosie Wojcik about your willingness to be a host from time to time.

The Brattleboro Labor Film Festival, Windham County’s first ever Labor Film Festival, will open on September 6 at 4 p.m. at the historic Latchis Theater, 50 Main St., in Brattleboro. Running on four Sundays through October 4, the festival will focus on a different theme each week, screening films showing the breadth of the labor movement and addressing many of the issues facing workers today. Each screening will be followed by a panel discussion, featuring speakers engaged directly in these issues.
Sunday September 6 at 4:00 PM - The current Labor Movement and the next generation of Labor Organizers - The festival opens with a screening of Partners, a documentary about the union drive at the Buffalo Starbucks that energized and reshaped the Labor movement across the world, and now grown to nearly 700 Starbucks locations in 40 states. The film takes viewers behind the scenes, showing how workers organized in the face of the company’s aggressive and well-funded anti-union attacks.
Followed by a panel discussion featuring Casey Moore, one of the leaders of the Buffalo Starbucks drive, worker organizers from Healthy Living in Vermont currently fighting for Union recognition, labor attorney Catherine Terrell, and Vermont AFL-CIO Vice President Bee Hesselbach.

Sunday September 27 at 4:00 PM - Organizing for social good, environmental justice, and homelessness - On September 27 we screen Strength of the Storm, a documentary about mobile home owners in Vermont uniting together after Hurricane Irene to fight for their rights.
Sunday October 4 - Labor history and how the Labor movement can inspire and guide our struggles today. The festival concludes with two films: Flint Sit Down Strike and The Wobblies.

GUILFORD COMMUNITY CHURCH,
INTERFAITH YOUTH GROUP FALL RE-LAUNCH
Young people, ages 14-18 in the greater Brattleboro area are invited to attend a lunch and information session on joining a multicultural interfaith youth group from noon-3 pm. Parents are encouraged to attend as well. The youth group typically meets at that time once a month, on the first Sunday, culminating in a much-anticipated week-long service trip in the spring.
