Happy Earth Day! 🌎
Today is a good reminder that caring for creation isn’t just a nice idea, it’s one of the very first callings God gives to humanity. In Genesis, we are entrusted with the care of the earth, placed in the garden “to till it and keep it.” From the very beginning, stewardship and protection of creation has been a key part of what it means to follow God.
Personally, I have always believe that while God’s presence is everywhere, God calls the woods home. I always feel God's presence in the beauty of nature, the quiet of the woods, the rhythm of a creek, the vastness of an open sky, and the uniqueness of God's creatures. Creation speaks, if we slow down enough to listen. And when we do, we’re reminded that this world is not ours to use up, but a gift to care for.
The United Methodist Book of Discipline puts it this way: “All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it.” That’s a calling for the church, not just individually, but together, to be people who protect, nurture, and respect the world God has made and entrusted to us.
So today, and every day, may we live as faithful stewards. Caring for the earth in big ways and small ones, teaching the next generation to do the same, and remembering that loving God also means loving what God has created.
Grace and peace, and happy Earth Day.
