Preparing for Sunday Worship
Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 7 – June 21, 2026)

This coming Sunday, the Word of the Lord meets us with both realism and deep comfort. We are not promised an easy path as followers of Jesus—but we are given something far greater: freedom, courage, and a sure hope grounded in Christ.
From Slavery to Freedom
St. Paul speaks plainly in Romans: “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Once, we were enslaved—bound to sin, unable to break free, and destined for death. But in Christ, everything has changed.
Through His death and resurrection, Jesus has brought you from death to life. You are no longer under condemnation. You live under grace. This means your identity is no longer defined by your past, your failures, or your fears—but by Christ’s righteousness freely given to you.
As you prepare for worship, consider:
• Where have you felt trapped or burdened?
• How does the promise of “life under grace” speak into that?
Courage in a Hostile World
Jesus does not sugarcoat what it means to follow Him. In the Gospel, He warns that His disciples will be misunderstood, opposed—even hated. Faithfulness to Christ may come at a cost.
Yet, He also gives a command that is as comforting as it is bold: “Do not fear.”
Why? Because your life is not ultimately in the hands of the world, but in the care of your heavenly Father. He knows you intimately—down to the very hairs on your head. You are of more value than many sparrows.
This is the courage of the Christian: not bravado, but trust. Even when the world pushes back, you are held firmly in the Father's care.
Honest Struggle, Steadfast Hope
Jeremiah’s words remind us that faith is not always easy or tidy. He knew opposition, mockery, and inner turmoil. Yet in the midst of it, he confesses: “The Lord is with me as a dread warrior.”
God does not abandon His people in their struggles. He stands with them—and fights for them.
So too for you. The same Lord who delivered Jeremiah has overcome sin, death, and the devil through Christ. He delivers you—even now—from the hand of evil and brings you into the land of the living.
Endurance That Leads to Salvation
Jesus calls His followers to endure—to remain steadfast in Him. This endurance is not something you muster on your own; it is sustained by His Word, His promises, and His presence.
You have become like your Teacher. And your Teacher has already won the victory.
As You Prepare for Worship
Take a few moments this week to reflect and pray:
• Give thanks for the freedom you have in Christ.
• Confess where fear or sin has taken hold.
• Ask for strength to endure with courage and faith.
• Rest in the promise that you are known, loved, and kept by God.
On Sunday, you will gather not as people striving to earn God’s favor, but as those already set free—living under grace, held in His care, and strengthened by His Word.
“You have been set free from sin and have become slaves of righteousness.” (Romans 6:18)
Let us come ready to rejoice in that freedom.
