Mensaje: "La Iglesia que Permanece"

Apocalipsis 14:6-7 | Romanos 3:19-28 | Juan 8:31-36

En la víspera del Día de Todos los Santos de 1517, el pequeño pueblo de Wittenberg se llenaba de peregrinos. No eran turistas. Habían venido a ver una colección de más de diecisiete mil reliquias, y a comprar, con las oraciones y los pagos debidos, años menos de purgatorio para ellos y para sus mu***os. Todo el sistema funcionaba con el miedo, y se lucraba de él.

Esa misma noche un monje clavó noventa y cinco tesis para debate en la puerta de la iglesia. Casi todas eran técnicas. Una era toda la Reforma: el verdadero tesoro de la iglesia es el evangelio. Ese tesoro nunca estuvo a la venta. Ya había sido entregado.

Quinientos nueve años después colgamos paramentos rojos y cantamos Castillo Fuerte. Pero el Día de la Reforma nunca fue pensado como un monumento. Jesús lo dijo todo en una sola frase a un grupo de nuevos creyentes: permanezcan en mi palabra, y conocerán la verdad, y la verdad los hará libres. Este domingo estamos en Juan 8, y venimos a la Mesa del Señor, donde ese tesoro todavía se reparte gratis.

Sermon: "The Abiding Church"

Revelation 14:6-7 | Romans 3:19-28 | John 8:31-36

On the eve of All Saints' Day in 1517, the little town of Wittenberg was filling up with pilgrims. They were not tourists. They had come to see a collection of more than seventeen thousand relics, and to buy, with the proper prayers and payments, years off purgatory for themselves and for their dead. The whole system ran on fear, and profited from it.

That same night a monk posted ninety-five statements for debate on the church door. Most of them were technical. One was the whole Reformation: the true treasure of the church is the gospel. The treasure was never for sale. It had already been given.

Five hundred and nine years later we hang red paraments and sing A Mighty Fortress. But Reformation Day was never meant to be a monument. Jesus put the whole thing to a room of brand-new believers in one sentence: abide in my word, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. We are in John 8 this Sunday, and we come to the Lord's Table, where that treasure is still handed out for free.

Mensaje: "Lo que pertenece a Dios"

Isaías 45:1-7 | 1 Tesalonicenses 1:1-10 | Mateo 22:15-22

Era una trampa. Primero lo halagaron, y luego hicieron la pregunta con la que pensaban acabarlo: ¿es lícito pagar impuestos al César, o no? Si dice que sí, la multitud se vuelve contra él. Si dice que no, Roma lo hace.

Jesús pidió una moneda y les hizo una pregunta propia. ¿De quién es esta imagen? La imagen del César estaba grabada en la moneda. La imagen de Dios está grabada en ti. Este domingo veremos qué le debemos a nuestra nación, qué le debemos a nuestro Señor, y por qué no son la misma clase de deuda.

La buena noticia es que Jesús no se limitó a decirnos que le diéramos a Dios lo que es suyo. Él se entregó por completo, para que nosotros pudiéramos pertenecer a Dios.

Sermon: "What Belongs to God"

Isaiah 45:1-7 | 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 | Matthew 22:15-22

It was supposed to be a trap. They opened with flattery, then asked the question they were sure would finish him: is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Say yes and the crowd turns on him. Say no and Rome does.

Jesus asked for a coin instead, and then asked a question of his own. Whose image is this? Caesar's image was stamped on the denarius. God's image is stamped on you. This Sunday we look at what we owe our nation, what we owe our Lord, and why those two are not the same kind of debt.

The good news is that Jesus did not simply tell us to give God what belongs to him. He gave himself completely, so that we could belong to God.
