Immanuel Lutheran Church Brandon, FL

Immanuel Lutheran Church Brandon, FL Immanuel Lutheran Church & School (LCMS) is
bi-lingual (English & Spanish) family focused, Bible-based Church in Brandon, FL

In a world full of confusion about the nature and meaning of truth and misleading statements about what is believed and taught, we stand with those who are not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ. With other Lutherans who hold to the truths rediscovered in the Reformation, we firmly confess the Christian faith handed down to us from the ancient Church in the words of the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Cr

eed and the Athanasian Creed. In addition to these creeds, we believe, teach and confess the Confessions of the Lutheran Church — understanding them to be the true and correct exposition of God’s Word.

Sermon: "It's Probably Nothing"
Ignoring the Seriousness and Consequences of Sin
Pastor Phil Ressler
Matthew 18:1-20 | Romans 13:1-10 | Ezekiel 33:7-9

"It's probably nothing." We say it about the noise the car started making, the spot on the X-ray, the thing a friend said that landed wrong. Sometimes we are right. Sometimes we are telling ourselves a story so we do not have to deal with it yet.

Matthew 18 is Jesus refusing to let us say it about sin. He talks about a millstone and a drowning, about a hand worth cutting off, in language so severe it is uncomfortable to read aloud. He is not being dramatic. He is being honest about what sin actually does to a person, and to the people around them.

So the question this Sunday is a simple one, and not a comfortable one. What are you currently calling nothing?

Whether you are joining us in person or online, we are glad you are here.

Sermon: "Setting Your Mind on the Things of God"
Pastor Phil Ressler
Matthew 16:21-28 | Romans 12:9-21 | Jeremiah 15:15-21

Peter had just gotten it exactly right. He confessed Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, and Jesus told him that flesh and blood had not revealed that to him. A few verses later Peter takes Jesus aside and gets it exactly wrong, and Jesus says the hardest thing he ever says to a friend: "Get behind me, Satan."

What changed was not Peter's love for Jesus. Peter was trying to protect him. The problem was where his mind was set. "You are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man." Good advice and God's direction are not the same thing, and the difference is rarely obvious in the moment.

Notice what Jesus does not say. He does not say leave. He says get behind. Peter had gotten out in front, and the place for a disciple is behind Jesus, following.

Whether you are joining us in person or online, we are glad you are here.
