Daria Braithwaite, Mission Education Coordinator for the Pontifical Mission Societies of Boston, wrote about the work of Missionary Childhood in Boston in a recent issue of the Bolletini (or Bulletin), the newsletter of the Pontifical Missionary Childhood Association in Rome.

“Students at East Boston Central Catholic School (EBCCS), an inner-city school, exemplify the fruits of the MCA program in the Archdiocese of Boston. For over 30 years, mission has become a way of life for students, both globally and locally.”

In Pope St. John Paul II’s encyclical Redemptoris Missio, he speaks about the two-fold task of evangelization in our world. There will always be the need for the work of mission “ad gentes”, which is the task of evangelization to non-Christians. This is the “missionary work that Jesus entrusted and still entrusts each day to his Church.” (34)

But Redemptoris Missio also speaks to the reality of the modern world and the loss of the faith in formerly Christian cultures, hence the need for the re-evangelization of peoples who historically were the ones to do this mission “ad gentes” work. So it’s a both/and proposition—we are called to be missionary disciples at home where Jesus has largely been forgotten, and we are still called to be missionary disciples to a larger world that has yet to know him.

When we support parts of the Church in areas of the world that poor and persecuted, we are doing something for the entire Body of Christ. For wealthier parts of the global church, ourselves included, not trying to address the needs of poorer members of our world is a kind of poverty in itself.

One of the highlights of our World Mission Sunday Mass in the Archdiocese of Boston is the presences of many choirs in many languages. The communion reflection by the Korean Catholic Community transported all those present at the Mass to heavenly heights!

In the early 17th century, Jesuit priests Fr. Isaac Jogues and Fr. John de Brebeuf traveled from France to North America to convert Native American tribes. They suffered torture, hunger, imprisonment, but their sacrifice was not in vain. As missionaries, they offered up all of their suffering, and their eventual death at the hands of the Mohawk tribe, for the conversion of souls. We can ask for their intercession today—St. Isaac and St. John, pray for missionaries who continue to bring the Gospel to parts of the world where Christ is still not known!

The global church in Boston came together today for a Mass celebrating the 100th Anniversary of World Mission Sunday! Cardinal Seán O’Malley, OFM Cap, quoted Fr. Giussani who once said, "He who does not give God, does not give enough."

"And that's what Mission Sunday is about," said the Cardinal, "giving God to the world." That's the most important thing missionaries have always done and continue to do, bring God in Word and Sacrament to the ends of the earth.

Cardinal Seán reminded those present at the Mass that there was a time when Boston was also a missionary diocese—back in 1845, when Bishop Fenwick wrote to the Propagation of the Faith in France and they gave $45,000 to the church in Boston. "In those days, we were on the receiving end, but today it's our responsibility to step up and help others parts of the global church in need."
