It all happened too fast. Friday was the celebration of the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Earlier this week, our U.S. Catholic Bishops consecrated our nation to the Sacred Heart as we prepare to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Birth of our Nation – the Declaration of Independence. They were gathered for their annual June meeting in Orlando, June 10-12. The idea is to pray that our country could be formed more in the image of Christ the Universal King. In our care for the poor and vulnerable, in our fostering of truth and charity, our church contributes to justice in our world. This, we all admit, is sorely needed.
We’d like to join in 250 hours of Eucharistic Adoration and 250 works of mercy. To that end, the Knights of Columbus are again sponsoring their overnight vigil before the Exposed Blessed Sacrament on July 2-3. It will begin at 8 pm Thursday night and continue through Friday at noon, with Mass following at 12:10 pm. These will be in the Divine Mercy Chapel. The sign-up sheet will be posted at the chapel. Knights will be present for each hour – you can sign up for your hour there – or just come! Perhaps we can get enough parishioners to make up the 250 prayer hours. But the Diocese is organizing as well.
Also, we encourage Works of Mercy – remember they are: (Corporal – from Matthew 25:31-46) Feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the imprisoned, care for the sick, bury the dead, (and Spiritual – from Catechism) instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish the sinner, comfort the afflicted, forgive offenses, bear wrongs patiently, and pray for the living and dead.
