Today, Thursday, March 19, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Please see below for a message from Bishop Frank J. Dewane.

The life of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, foster father of Jesus Christ, and Patron Saint of the Universal Church, may be of particular relevance today as he highlights the importance of "being present.” Being present is a quality that we seek from within ourselves and from others, as we engage with a chaotic world that is full of easy distraction.

Although never directly quoted in the Bible, St. Joseph’s presence and watchful care is deeply felt. In caring for the Holy Family entrusted to him by the Lord, St. Joseph was a responsible guardian and an exemplary model of quiet strength, dignity and holiness. His steady presence recalls the very nature of God the Father, the tireless guardian of His people.

As St. Joseph is recognized and celebrated today, let us pray that we may become more that model of holiness, and that we may emulate his ability to create a sign of God’s presence in our own lives and in our family.

May St. Joseph watch over you and intercede for you. St. Joseph, pray for us!

+ Frank J. Dewane
Bishop of the Diocese of Venice in Florida
