From the rock of the church to a stumbling stone in just a few verses. This week we are looking at Matthew 16:21–28 and what it actually cost Jesus to be our Redeemer.

Peter wasn't being faithless—he was being protective. He had Scripture on his side, focusing on the throne while skipping over the servant who was despised and rejected. How often do we do that? Keeping the promises we like and leaving the rest on the page.

A redeemer in the Old Testament was a family member who paid the price to buy back what was lost, and it cost them something. Jesus went to Jerusalem for a disciple who told him not to go, and paid the price for the very man who would later deny him. Barely a fortnight later, that same man stood in Jerusalem and preached the cross he once refused. That is the distance a Redeemer can cover in one life.

1.) What part of your life have you quietly marked off limits to God?

2.) Where are you working to earn back something only a Redeemer can buy?

3.) If your life answered the question "Who do you say Jesus is?" instead of your words, what would it say?

Rock Former — Matthew 16:13–20
Standing in Caesarea Philippi—surrounded by statues of other gods and a culture claiming power—Jesus asked His disciples a defining question: "Who do you say that I am?"

Peter’s answer wasn't just a statement; it was a confession born of time spent walking with Him. When Jesus spoke of the gates of Hades not prevailing, He wasn't talking about defense. Gates defend—this is a picture of the church advancing on death's front door, and the gates not holding!

Our answer to His question grows the same way Peter's did: through reading, praying, studying, serving, and loving.

Reflection Questions to ponder today:

1) If someone asked today who Jesus is to you, what would you honestly say?

2) Where have you shaped Jesus into something more comfortable than He is?

3) Which means of grace is God inviting you back into this week?

"We are often quicker to draw the circle than to widen it."

Spending some time reflecting on Matthew 15:21–28 today. The story of the Canaanite woman reminds us that God has never been offended by people who refuse to stop asking, and His welcome is always bigger than we assume. Her persistence wasn't rudeness—it was deep, unwavering faith.

A few questions worth sitting with today:

1: Who have you quietly decided is outside the circle of God's welcome?

2: Where have you stopped asking God for something because you assumed the answer was no?

3: Whose faith has surprised you recently, and what did it teach you?
