The postponed 2020 General Conference begins on Tuesday in Charlotte, North Carolina. General Conference is the worldwide legislative gathering of lay and clergy delegates from Untied Methodist annual and central conferences from all over the world. Given the importance of this gather, we want to be intentional about praying for General Conference as the business of the general church is transacted.

Beginning Monday, everyday there will be a different prayer focus items shared to this page. The areas to be covered include prayers for the general church, legislation and logistics, and our Mississippi Annual Conference delegates. This is meant to provide a guide for how to pray and to ensure that each member of the delegation is prayed for by name. These posts should post each morning through General Conference.

If you’re inclined, you can follow the hashtag for the latest updates. There is also a livestream that can be found at a link that will be in the comment section of this post. You can also watch this space for updates throughout the gathering.

Boyle Friends: Everyone is invited to the "Bluegrass Mass" at Dockery Farms on Sunday, April 23rd, at 10:30 a.m.!

I am impressed by the preparation going into this celebration by the bluegrass band, celtic band), the Reverend Les Hegwood, and the hospitality team at Calvary Episcopal. I'll be heading over tomorrow morning to review my parts of the worship service.

We won't have anything going on at Boyle UMC on Sunday, so please come out to Dockery Farms for the service at 10:30.

Bring your own chairs, bring a potluck dish to share, and bring a cooler with drinks. I'll also have a few sturdy chairs for those people who don't have their own lawn chairs (or need something more upright).

I look forward to sharing in the Lord's table with our Episcopalian brothers and sisters.

Peace,
Pastor Brad

An old drawing of the original Boyle Methodist Church, built in 1909. It was the first brick church built in Bolivar County, Mississippi. This was drawn before the church was deconstructed (after having severe structural issues), and the bricks, pews, communion rail, and other furniture was reused in the building and furnishing of today's Boyle United Methodist Church.

The season of Lent (the 40 days before Easter) is a time to give, pray, and abstain from our usual indulgences. Giving to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is a great way to help those who are suffering in the wake of the devastating earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. 100% of your donation goes directly to the organization providing the help (in this case, the International Blue Crescent, which has been vetted by UMCOR).

If you fast/abstain from eating out or buying needless objects, you can easily send the extra money to people in great need.

Please join us in prayer for the people impacted by the new earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, striking the same areas devastated by the recent major earthquakes.

UMCOR will continue to work with local partners IBC Uluslararası Mavi Hilal Vakfı and others as they assess new support needed.

Donate now at https://advance.umcmission.org/p-641-umcor-international-disaster-response-and-recovery.aspx, selecting "IDR - Turkey/Syria" as the gift designation.

What do Christians believe and why? Our upcoming sermon series on the Creation of Christian Beliefs will explore the basic creedal ideas of the Christian faith.

With reference to the book "Creed: What Christians Believe and Why" by United Methodist pastor Adam Hamilton, this six-week sermon series will explore how Christians developed their ideas about the nature of God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Church, the Forgiveness of Sins, and the Resurrection.

Everyone is invited to join us in worship at Boyle United Methodist Church on Sundays at 9:30. People of all faiths and no faith are welcome.

I look forward to exploring these topics with you!

I'm finally starting a page for Boyle United Methodist Church. Boyle UMC is a wonderful and unique congregation that has kindly welcomed me and my family to the Mississippi Delta, and I'm honored to serve as their pastor. The sanctuary is lovely and well-maintained, as you can see from the photos I took today, with the external brick re-used from the older and original brick sanctuary built over a century ago and replaced in the 1960s. The communion railing was also reused, as was the stained glass window that now hangs behind the choir loft. Better than the building is the people, who take care of their church, take care of each other, and welcome the visitors that drop into worship on Sundays at 9:30 a.m.

Everyone is welcome and invited to worship with us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m., when we follow a traditional Christian order of worship with hymns, prayers, scripture readings, a children's lesson, and a sermon. There's no dress code or expectation that you already know the songs. Come as you are, and if you're open to hearing God's Word for you that day, then you'll leave better off. We look forward to seeing you!

Peace,
Pastor Brad Corban
