On July 27th, The Episcopal Church remembers one of my heroes in the faith, The Rev. Dr. William Reed Huntington (d. July 26, 1909). Here's a quote from a series of essays he wrote in 1870 that could have been written yesterday.
"Dissatisfaction is the one word that best expresses the state of mind in which Christendom finds itself to-day. There is a wide-spread misgiving that we are on the eve of momentous changes. Unrest is everywhere."
The solution to this unrest, according to Huntington, is a commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In a time of deep division, of troubling language of authoritarianism, of a rise in Christian Nationalism, we would do well to remember that the Good News of Jesus Christ is not built on power or privilege, but on humble, servant leadership.
“A rigid, unsympathetic temper on our part will never win America to the Church. We must cause it to be clearly understood that God’s Household is large enough and roomy enough for all forms of activity that make for good.”
-William Reed Huntington, "The Church Idea: essays toward unity", 1870.
