Blessed Risk Taking – A Farewell Sermon

Just about nine and half years ago, on January 8th, 2017, the First Sunday after the Epiphany, the Baptism of our Lord, I stepped into this pulpit for the first time. The morning was full of energy and excitement. There was also the twinge of anxiety and stress. In my first sermon, I noted that “There is no instruction manual for the adventure we are about to embark upon....

Out of the Chaos

My favorite place on earth is the 50 feet from Miss Penny’s front door to the sweet-tea-colored waters of Palmetto Creek. There, I’ve spent plenty of days relaxing on the swinging bed reading a book, sitting in an Adirondack chair listening to music, and above all, floating in the creek with a drink in my hand. The water there is calm. ...

Do Not Let Your Hearts Stay Troubled

This might be hard to believe, but I have not always been the kind soul that stands before you this morning. There was a time when I could, occasionally, be a bit of a jerk. One phase of my life when I was particularly rude came at the tail end of high school. As high school seniors are wont to do, as the school year came to an end, we got quite nostalgic....

Jesus Doesn’t Hold a Grudge

I don’t know about you, but I’ve now heard the “Doubting Thomas” story every Second Sunday of Easter for 43 years, and I’ve always thought that Thomas gets a really bad rap. I imagine that every Second Sunday of Easter, Thomas invites the gang over to reminisce. He recalls with them, the time, two thousand some years ago, when, a week after everyone else, he got to meet the resurrected Jesus in that upper room. ...

The Legend of the Dogwood

On March 15, 1917, a little girl named Juanita Picklesimer was born in Appalachia – Johnson County, Kentucky, to be specific. She grew up learning to play the guitar and eventually made her way to Charleston, West Virginia where she performed hillbilly music as “The Gal from the Hills.” In 1938 she married musician Lee Moore, they moved to Wheeling, and for the next 22 years made their way around Appalachia playing music as part of the WWVA Original Jamboree. ...

God with Us

One of my favorite things to do during Holy Week is procrastinate. Sure, we have 12 services over 8 days. Sure, I have multiple sermons to write. Sure, the phones or the copier or both will quit working this week. But why not spend way too much time researching how to properly use a colon in a sentence? This year’s procrastination of choice has been the Biblical text rabbit holes....

Its the Colon

If you’ve ever heard me preach on the Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday, then you know that I’m not a huge fan. Don’t get me wrong, I love the story of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem on the Sunday before his death and resurrection, and the Passon Narrative is a powerful reminder of the sacrifice that Jesus willingly suffered to take away the sins of the world....

Add a word, ruin a lesson

Every year or so, a recurring social media trend will pop up and make its rounds again. It may have started in January 2020 when The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon challenged his audience to “add a word and ruin a book.” Some hilarious responses to that challenge have been posited over the years. “Gone with the Wind Chimes,” “Requiem for a Dream Boat,” “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Malfunction,” and “The Little Engine that Could Not” are among my favorites....

Lent invites us to a season of self-reflection, study, and prayer that we, like Nicodemus, might engage our curiosity to deepen our faith in the Son of God who came into this world not to condemn it, but that through him, the whole world might be saved. No matter how hard that might be to believe.

One of the challenges of reading a two-thousand-year-old sacred text and preaching on it in bite-sized morsels from the Lectionary is that the various character…

Mighty to Save

In his opening remarks to Friday’s meeting of the Executive Council of The Episcopal Church, Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe asked the group, “Have you ever noticed that some years, Lent seems like a little bit out of context? Things are going along well, spring has come early, and a season of fasting and repentance seems sort of misplaced. ‘We’re good—no need for sacrifice here!’ Not this year....
