Pastor Nelson and Karen: They were prepared a few weeks prior to this to move into the Pastoral house at the property of the new church in Villa Espana. Then the house was broken into the week prior. There are bars on all the windows and doors. There is also a section of the wall that is comprised of a brick, then a space, then a brick, covering a large section of the wall, to let fresh air in the house. The bad folks just knocked the bricks out and stole what little was in the house.
At the time Nelson was preaching in another village and was really upset when he found out. So in American lexicon he was either going to get his gun or his Bible. Since guns are not allowed in Nica, the Bible was his weapon. He found the person who knew who entered the house and led him to Christ. Whereupon this person quickly confessed who was responsible. Then Nelson found that party, led him to Christ, and got his goods back. Now that is being weaponized!
So we discussed with Nelson and Karen what they needed in order to safely move into the house. Here is the truth. The only household goods they actually own is an old bedframe that needs repairs and a worse shaped mattress. So along with estimates of what was needed to make the house safe for Karen (a wall), we had Nelson estimate what they needed to properly move into the house. He came back with an estimate of $700 for everything. Oh No! I knew that was not right. So we turned to Karen and told her to make a list of everything they needed, down to furniture, appliances and fixtures. The list was long and we knew we were on our way. I did not have the funds at that time for outfitting a whole house, but gave them a budget of $4,000. So on their way home they stopped in Chinandega and priced everything, which came to just under $4,000. Then we appealed to one of our dear supporting churches for help, and in a few days we had the funds, not only for the household goods, but also for the wall around the house. Joy!
We could tell Nelson did not understand why taking care of the house first was more important than other possible needs of the ministry. We explained this way, ("happy wife, happy Pastor!).
