I want to talk about something I’ve never talked about and I’m going to be doing a message on it soon at church and that is BIBLICAL MODESTY.

1 Timothy 2:9 Likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,

Now, in modern times they’re certainly nothing wrong with braiding your hair.

We have to look at the context.

The women in Paul’s day were doing so much to their hair, especially in the Greek culture that it was a distraction during service.

Others were wearing so much jewelry that it was a distraction, again, especially in more pagan cultures.

So what is biblical modesty?

Biblical modesty is the practice of humility, self-control, and respect for God and others, expressed through these 3 things.

1-Behavior
2-Our speech
3-How we dress in public.

Biblical modesty is emphasizing inner character over outward adornment.

It’s starts with the heart. ❤️

Christians don’t go around in public using curse words.

Christians don’t behave like the world does.

Christians don’t dress in a way that pulls in attention to our bodies, showing nakedness or causing lust.

One supposed Christian woman said “Well these nasty men shouldn’t be looking” and while that’s true, Christian women must be mindful of how they dress. We are not if this world.

But within our dress code, this applies to both men and women not just the ladies.

I have a personal conviction about mixed swimming.
I do not believe in it.
When you go swimming with other people that are not your spouse, you are going to be seeing other people scantly clad, nearly n**e, and I’m telling you it causes problems.

I know what I’m talking about…….

I’m not being an old fogie, I’m being biblical here.

We are to be holy because He is holy.

One of my daughters tried to walk out the door one day with something that in my opinion very inappropriate on……

I said young lady march yourself, right back into your room and change your clothes. She was mad at me for a month, but that’s OK.

1 Peter 3:3 NLT Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes.
4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.
5 This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful.

Peter is not saying that it’s wrong to wear nice clothes, but during the time that he wrote this, they were under severe persecution and the lack of money was very prevalent in their society.

They were under constant persecution. Most of them could not afford new dresses or things like that and Peter was telling them that is not what matters.

The basics of it all is this, if the inside is clean, that is, our hearts, then the outside will be clean from impurity or anything that causes lust.

Well, the fact is, we will not be perfect, we will blow it at times, but we should make an attempt to be modest in our dress, speech and behavior.

1 Corinthians 6:19 NLT
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,
20 for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.

When God says NO!

This is a very important subject. Everyone please please read this.

Have you ever wanted to do something for Jesus but it didn’t happen?

You were disappointed and didn’t understand why it didn’t work or didn’t come to pass because you had pure motives that were serving Jesus?

Read this very slowly

Acts 16:6 ESV And they went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been FORBIDDEN BY THE HOLY SPIRIT TO SPEAK the word in Asia.
7 And when they had come up to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but THE SPIRIT OF JESUS DID NOT ALLOW THEM.

I know in my own life there have been times where I was severely disappointed and let down because I had something I wanted to do for God and then it was a complete flop or it didn’t come to pass.

Sometimes what we want to do, although it is a pure thing and a good thing, sometimes it is not God’s will.

Why?

Because God can see things that we don’t. He sees the results, He sees down the road. What we see might look promising, but what he sees, this thing might destroy us. 

Paul’s job was to speak the word of God and see people saved, and all of a sudden the Holy Spirit forbids him to speak.

That’s tough! That’s hard!

Why Lord?

So Paul thought “well we’ll just go into this other town and preach” and the spirit of Jesus said no!

This is where a lot of Christians get upset.

I’ve had people come to me wanting to do something for the church and deep down in my spirit, something was stirring saying no.

I have told people no, that I didn’t feel like God was wanting to do whatever it was and then I’ve had those same people get very upset with me like I was trying to stop God from moving in their life.

That’s not it at all. The spirit of the Lord sometimes says no.

I’ll give you a good example

During Covid, I was asked by a former Mayor for our church to lead worship at an outdoor Easter service.

Yay! God wants to use our church!

Something in me immediately said don’t do this! It was STRONG. DON’T DO THIS.

I remember Triva saying I think you should listen to God and not do this!

I ignored it, ignored Triva and I kept getting the feeling over and over and then the spirit of the Lord spoke to my heart and said, “A spirit of religion is controlling the service, don’t have anything to do with it.”

I kept thinking,”But what I’m doing is a pure thing, a good thing, it’s Worship Music, why would God not want me to do this?”

I kept ignoring God thinking “But I’m doing a good thing, a holy thing!”

Then the people leading this service came at me and fired me and said “we don’t want you playing, we want only traditional hymnals played, not praise and worship.”

One of the people even said, “no one wants to hear your newfangled music!”

I was devastated and hurt….I mean, it HURT.

Had I listened to God none of this would have happened!

But I refused to hear the Spirit.

My intentions were perfect, but my obedience was not.

When God says no, just understand, there’s a reason.

When God says no, He knows the road ahead. We don’t.

Islam is conquering America, but the question is why?

They don’t just preach their faith, they push their faith. And make no mistake. I don’t agree with one single thing about Islam, but these people, they live their faith.

I worked with a Muslim doctor and every single day she stopped several times a day went into her office and prayed.

They are not ashamed of their faith, however wrong it is.

Meanwhile, what is the church doing?
For the most part, absolutely nothing.

3000 churches a year close down in America.

Why are we not sharing our faith?

When we see someone out in public, who is hurting or sick, why are we not offering them PRAYER? Why are we keeping our faith locked up? 

The average Christian, studies show, do not read their Bibles or pray. The average Christian believes that their job being a Christian is to attend church on Sunday.

No call to evangelize, no call to reach out, just lazy Christianity.

Lord, give us some Philips who will turn cities upside down for you! 

We better wake up before the rights that we hold so dear are taken away.
