The installation of Sarah Fisher as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina is drawing national attention after she reportedly became the first openly le***an bishop in a same-sex relationship to lead an Episcopal diocese in the American South. Fisher, who is in a same-sex union with the Rev. Mandy Brady, was officially installed on Saturday.
Fisher emphasized unity during the bishop selection process, saying her congregation was “not unanimous in politics” or even “what brand of coffee to serve,” but “united in our desire to see, know and serve the Risen Christ.” She also said, “Getting proximate to those who differ from us is vital,” arguing that Christians should recognize “the light of Christ within” others despite disagreements.
Her election reflects the continuing theological direction of The Episcopal Church, which has faced decades of division over sexuality and church doctrine. The controversy traces back to 2003, when Gene Robinson became the denomination’s first openly gay bishop, sparking a major conservative exodus from the church.
That split led many conservative congregations to leave the denomination and triggered years of legal battles over church property and assets. During the same period, Episcopal Church membership declined significantly, dropping from about 2.1 million members in 2006 to roughly 1.54 million by 2023.
