When we talk about imitation, I often think of two animals: the parrot and the monkey. The parrot, which frequently overhears conversations, sometimes produces sounds and repeats what it hears. Monkeys, on the other hand, imitate people's gestures. Hence, the expression to “imitate like a monkey” implies that we do things without really understanding them. In reality, parrots and monkeys imitate what they see or hear without understanding its essence.

This is not the case for the disciples who imitate Christ. We do not merely imitate Christ’s gestures or words; in fact, our whole being—body, soul, and spirit—is inspired by Jesus’ life and teachings. We do not imitate Christ superficially; we draw our source from the very nature of Christ; we have the Spirit of Christ and walk through life’s journey, holding the Lord’s hand.

As disciples, let us say, as the apostle Paul did in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.” It is not a matter of imitating Paul as a person only but of imitating him as he imitates Christ, for Christ is the source and purpose of the disciple's life.

May we imitate Christ Jesus by making his words in John 5:19 our own: “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless it is something He sees the Father doing; for whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in the same way.”

It is incredible to me how quickly our lives have adapted to the GPS technologies on our phones and in our cars. I remember in the first couple of decades of pastoral ministry carrying a big book of maps in my car so that, while making pastoral calls, I could try and find the locations of the people I was visiting. Now my GPS app not only guides me through every turn, but it also can put the addresses in order of their proximity and tells me the fastest way to get there.

There are some helpful maps and guides to discipleship. And I am thankful for those who have done thoughtful biblical and theological work to give us models and examples to follow. However, in the life the disciple, no map or guide can fully replace the awareness and sensitivity of being led by the Spirit of God.

In Galatians, Paul’s instruction to “keep in step with the Spirit” comes in the midst of his encouragement to consistently pursue the growth of the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. It seems that, for Paul, the more Jesus’ disciples develop the fruit of the Spirit, the more in tune our hearts will be to the voice and the leading of the Spirit. Our destination is Christlikeness and our guidance system is the Word and the Spirit.

Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25)

Today, we join in prayer for the people of Colombia following the earthquake reported today.

Let us pray for those facing moments of uncertainty.
Let us pray for those grieving the loss of a loved one.
Let us pray for the medical and rescue teams, that they may be strengthened and guided by God.
Let us pray for the Church of Christ, that, united, it may bring help and extend its hands with love, support, and solidarity.

We stand with you, Colombian brothers and sisters, and with our sister region, Iglesia del Nazareno América del Sur

🤝You can support Nazarene churches as they reach out with Christ’s love in the wake of this developing crisis. To give, visit ncm.org/venezuelaFB.

On June 24, two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela just seconds apart, causing widespread destruction. The disaster comes at a dire time for Venezuela, which was already enduring a political and financial crisis. Authorities have declared a national state of emergency, with at least 920 people confirmed dead, thousands injured, and millions of people affected. Search and rescue efforts continue as many people remain missing.

Nazarene church leaders are currently assessing damage to congregations and surrounding neighborhoods.

Initial reports indicate that several church buildings have sustained damage, including one congregation that can no longer meet after the movie theater they rented was severely affected. While no church members have been displaced from their homes, some members have lost their livelihoods as businesses and workplaces collapsed. In addition, several Nazarene pastors are awaiting news of missing family members.

Local churches are coordinating a compassionate response and preparing to provide food, medical care, construction materials, and other practical assistance in the days and weeks to come.

Please join us in praying for the people of Venezuela. Pray for those who are grieving, for those with missing family members, for survivors and first responders, and for church leaders as they bring Christ's love and hope to their communities in the days ahead. 💙🇻🇪
