Throwback Thursday to an iconic building that graced our campground up until 1990: The Chapel! The Freestads once ran a dairy farm and they housed their cattle in a big, beautiful barn just south of their old farmhouse. Upon giving their property to the church for a campground in the late 1950s, the barn was quickly converted into a place of worship. And there was nothing quite like worshipping in that structure, with the sweet, old barnwood fragrance, the sunlight peeking through the holes in the roof and barn swallows flying overhead as we lifted our voices in beautiful harmonies that could be heard clear across the campground. In the midst of the humble and ordinary, we found sacred space and the blessings of community. You served us well, dear old Chapel! 🫶

Samish Wake-up Work Day 2024 is a wrap! A big shout out to the folks who volunteered their time and labor to sweep away the winter cobwebs ahead of our first retreat of the 2024 camping season. And fun was had by all!

Samish Island or the Arctic Circle? While the forecasted snowstorm didn't materialize here in the Skagit Valley, an Arctic cold front has settled in for the next few days, with a low last night of 11°F, which felt like 0°F (our hot take: you can't tell the difference at that temp-- it's all cold and your nose hairs freeze regardless. 🤷) The weather outside may be frightful, but all of the buildings with pipes are buttoned up tight, and we are warming ourselves with the thought of a new camping season right around the corner!

Phase One of our shoreline protection plan is underway, thanks to volunteers Barry, Dwayne, and Owen. As we continue to gather coarse materials to prevent further beach erosion during the high winter tides, our short-term goal is to prevent the Salish Sea from pouring into Lake Freestad at our lowest points. Interested in being a part of these ongoing efforts? Contact Camp Manager Christine Campbell at [email protected]

Happy late Autumn from Camp Samish! Have you ever wondered what happens after the last guest of the last retreat of the camping season leaves us? Well, here's a sneak peek! Many of you are likely aware of the higher winter tides, called king tides, and their effect on coastal communities. As climate norms change, we are seeing an increase in higher, and therefore more damaging, king tides, with our lower property along the north beach taking a few hits in the way of erosion. We have a thin strip of land between Lake Freestad and Samish Bay, and should this shoreline give way due to tidal erosion, we stand to lose our beloved Lake Freestad to the bay, and along with it acres of property and recreational opportunities. Like our neighbors along the sea-level Blue Heron Road, we are implementing sandbagging as part of a mitigation plan to prevent future erosion.

Now, here's where YOU come in! You know the saying, "Many hands make light work"? We are looking for volunteers over the next week and a half to come lend a hand with our sandbagging efforts. While we cannot promise good weather, we can promise a warm, crackling fire in the dining hall, hot cocoa, and coffee! If interested, please contact Camp Manager Christine Campbell at [email protected].
