Trinity Sunday

From the Athanasian Creed: “We worship one God in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity; Neither confusing the Persons, / nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, / another of the Holy Ghost; But the Godhead of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost is all one, / the glory equal, the majesty co-eternal.”

On the Sunday after Pentecost, the church devotes its attention to the mysteries of the Trinity. In both the Old and New Testaments, God reveals that he is One God in three persons and throughout Scripture we are given insights into the eternal relationship of love within the Godhead. Christians since the 1st century have marveled at this intricate revelation and have carefully defined what Scripture says about this loving God we worship. In the Nicene Creed, the word ‘Trinity’ is used to describe God’s revelation of himself and, later, the much longer Athanasian Creed was written to elaborate on the truths defined by the Nicene Creed. In many churches, the Athanasian Creed is read or sung in the Sunday liturgy as an act of praise and recognition of the profound and glorious nature of the God we serve.

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“He will give the rain for your land in its season… that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil.” - Deuteronomy 11:14

God designed us to be dependent creatures. Every few hours our stomachs remind us that self-sufficiency is a myth. We rely on creation and those who cultivate it to satisfy us on a daily basis. And creation is sustained only by our gracious God, who upholds all things. These fundamental realities are easy to forget in our modern society, where conveniences often separate us from the growth and harvest of the food we eat. This makes the observance of the Rogation Days all the more important reminders today. Since at least the 5th century, the Western church has set aside five specific days to petition God for blessings on the growth and harvest of the year’s produce. April 25, the sixth Sunday of Easter, and the three days before Ascension day are designated “Rogation Days” (“Rogation” coming from a Latin verb meaning “to ask”). On these days, the church remembers our dependence on God for our sustenance. We fast and pray for a bountiful year and ask blessings upon those who labor for the harvest. In an ancient tradition, these prayers are made in procession in a practice called “beating the bounds.” The clergy and congregants pray and walk the boundaries of their parish neighborhood, blessing the fields and gardens, acknowledging God as our source of life, growth, and sustenance.

Almighty God, Lord of heaven and earth: We humbly pray that your gracious providence may give and preserve to our use the harvests of the land and of the seas, and may prosper all who labor to gather them, that we, who are constantly receiving good things from your hand, may always give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Dear Good Shepherd Family, please see the following obituary for our beloved sister in Christ, Mary Creech:

Mary Elizabeth (Police) Creech
Mary Elizabeth (Police) Creech, 77, of Chillicothe, passed at 3:55 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2026, at Covenant Health LeConte, Sevierville, Tennessee unexpectedly.
She was born April 16, 1949, in Washington D.C., to the late Anthony and Esther Elizabeth Hassig Police. On December 22, 1973, she married Gregory W. Creech who survives.
Also surviving are daughters, Anna Creech, of Richmond, VA and Emily Creech, of Canal Wi******er; a brother, Anthony Police, Jr., of Mansfield; a sister, Rose Zook, of Chambersburg; a brother-in-law, Dr. Bert Hodges, of Ipswich, MA; a sister-in-law, Debra Parks-Police, of Florida; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Hodges, and a brother, John Police.
Mary was a Registered Nurse working as a nutritionist at WIC for many years and then in retirement working as a volunteer counselor at Elizabeth’s Hope in Chillicothe, both roles offering ministry to young mothers. Since 1977, she was a faithful pastors wife, serving in many capacities that fit her giftedness of hospitality and helping people, including, among other things, leading the team that served a monthly Community Dinner for 200 people in need and offering thoughtful, beautiful after-work dinners for class members at her church’s Alpha courses.
Since 2014, she has been a member of Good Shepherd Anglican Church, Bourneville, Ohio, where she served on the Church’s Altar Guild and was a “founding member” of Women Drinking Coffee and the Women’s Bible Study. She also volunteered as a costumed docent at the historic Adena Mansion and Gardens.
More than anything, Mary was a faithful Christian since childhood, a loving wife, and a devoted joyful mother of her daughters, enjoying every moment of phone calls and time together, walking with them, doing creative projects with them, cooking with them, and more. It is fitting and a blessing from God that her last day on earth was spent with them in the Smoky Mountains, walking a wildflower trail, playing games, puzzling, laughing, and loving together.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday May 12th in Canal Wi******er Methodist Church, 15 West Columbus Street, Canal Wi******er, with Rev. Tom Hoover officiating. A private graveside service will be held for family in Grandview Cemetery with Fr. Cody Lang officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the WARE FUNERAL HOME.
In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that trees be informally planted “in her memory” in lawns, churchyards, etc.
