Boulder Friends Meeting - Quakers

Boulder Friends Meeting - Quakers Boulder Friends Meeting is an unprogrammed meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Today, Quakers are active in many countries across the globe.

At Boulder Friends Meeting, our meetings for worship are held in expectant silence with no formal program or pastor, as each worshiper seeks to listen to the Spirit within. We are members of the Religious Society of Friends, often shortened to Friends or simply called Quakers. As Friends, we “let our lives speak” as we apply our religious beliefs each day. We live values-based lives to benefit all

members of society and nature. Simplicity, integrity, equality, peace/nonviolence, and stewardship of our Earth are ideals toward which we strive, individually and in community. Our children and youth learn these values through age-appropriate activities in our First Day School (Sunday School), at Mountain Friends Camp, and in larger Quaker gatherings where they greet friends with similar values. Our Christian roots have been enriched by the wisdom found in many religious traditions. In addition to Christians, our community includes Buddhists, Jews, agnostics, atheists, and others who share our values and practices. Spiritual seekers from a large variety of backgrounds have found a comfortable home in Boulder Friends Meeting. Quakerism originated in England nearly 400 years ago, and many followers of the Quaker path came to America in search of religious freedom. Quakers were the first spiritual group to allow women full equality to men in the congregation. When you join us in silent meeting, you participate in the continuous and uninterrupted flow of spiritual belief that contributed to the abolition of slavery, women’s rights, and the creation of Americas first public schools. In fact, thanks to our new hybrid in-person/Zoom format, several Friends from across the United States and Europe join our Boulder Friends Meeting worship each Sunday morning. We welcome all people and all belief systems, as we find strength in diversity. Our website will help you to learn more about Boulder Friends Meeting, our worship, and our activities. We invite you to join our community of progressive seekers.

As a peace church, how to Quakers observe ? The answer depends upon the person. Some Friends take time on Memorial Day to reflect on the physical and emotional trauma that happens to all people affected by war. Some Friends teach or learn about Conscientious Objector status, perhaps by supporting young people in building their personal case file against war. Some Friends resist war by refusing to pay taxes, and some Friends look for ways to continue paying health care to veterans while resisting other war taxes.

As a Quaker, how do you intend to observe Memorial Day? Reflections are welcome in the chat.

This week's Vitality newsletter offered some food for thought. You can read it here:

Visit the “People of the Sacred Land” exhibit at the Museum of Boulder, 2205 Broadway. As we consider the meaning of the 250th anniversary of American Independence and the 150th anniversary of Colorado statehood, let’s center the voices and perspectives of Native people, past and present, and reflect on the legacies we inherit. This exhibit highlights key findings from the Truth, Restoration, and Education Commission (TREC) Reports, paired with artwork by Native artists addressing the personal impact of these histories. Free-$12, 303-449-3464, museumofboulder.org.

Museums are places of inspiration, contemplation and community engagement. They help us to value the places that we live, work and visit, and help us understand where we have come from. They inspire learning and creativity, for children and adults, and work actively to ensure that a broad and divers...

Everytime I become overwhelmed with the world and the atrocities committed within it, I come here (our BFM page) and scroll through other pages. What I see are people making a difference, speaking up, honoring their beliefs...and I feel better. Being a part of a community invested in other people and their circumstances is so very important. I'm very limited in how I can affect change, but I try, and I'll keep trying, for as long as I am able.

Here is a group of leaders who are standing together and showing up for those who can't.

With Love & Light,
Mena

Amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and accelerating West Bank settlement expansion, we came together with hundreds of Christian leaders from across the U.S. to pressure Congress to take urgent action for Palestine.

Our joint Christian advocacy summit focused on 3 key policy demands: Block arms transfers to Israel, restore funding to East Jerusalem hospital network, and restore funding to UNRWA.

At a vigil today on Capitol Hill, FCNL’s Scoville Fellow Lydia El Sayegh spoke about how her Palestinian Christian family has been impacted by U.S. policy, and the urgent action Congress must take to support the rights, needs, and dignity of Palestinians.

“Carrying the memory of tens of thousands of genocide victims, and hope for survivors, We are supporting essential legislation today: No more bombs to Israel!”

“Additionally, as we demand to Block the Bombs, Palestinians, injured by those US bombs, need to stay and can stay in Palestine. The East Jerusalem Hospital Network is vital. The path from Gaza to Jerusalem needs to be reopened,” she continued.

“Thank you for bearing witness to God’s power in the halls of human power. May God move through you.”
