one, one thousand⦠Featuring the art of Debe Arlook, who is an interdisciplinary photographic artist, author, educator, and mentor whose work examines memory, meditation, caregiving, and perception.
one, one thousand... is a different kind of love story. It is a portrait of maternal devotion and an expression of the bond between two sisters. Interdisciplinary artist Debe Arlook bears witness to her sister Loriās caregiving experience of struggle and grace in this intimate illustration of lifelong care for Loriās son David, a nonverbal man living with a rare, incurable form of epilepsy and severe autism. The title draws from Lori's words as she counts the length of each seizure.
Join us for an opening reception on May 17th at 11 am, immediately following our Sunday Morning Gathering, in which we'll have a Special Sunday Message offered by Lori Sandler, the subject of Debeās exhibit, who will tell her story of raising her son David, who has a rare incurable form of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.
Through traditional photography, filmmaking, and multiple art forms, Arlook seeks to give voice to Davidās silence in an attempt to understand his inner lifeāhis intelligence, perceptions, and consciousness beyond language and diagnoses. This project is a testament to the countless unseen caregivers and loved ones they care for.
