Today, July 22nd, the Church celebrates the feast day of St. Mary Magdalene, the first person to witness the risen Christ and the 'apostle to the apostles' (in the words of St. Thomas Aquinas).
Along with being a renowned and devoted follower of Jesus in the New Testament, St. Mary Magdalene serves as a reminder, today, of the courage and faith required to speak the truth while trusting in God's love.
She bears an ointment jar in many depictions due to her traditional association with the woman who anointed Christ's feet in the Gospels, such as Mark 14:3-9 (thanks Pope Gregory I), and is the patron saint of repentant sinners, contemplative life, and hairdressers. So, think about her the next time you're at the barber.
