The Church of the Advent is a Christian community which gathers together day by day and week by week to know and make known the grace of God which comes to believers through Jesus Christ. All that we are and all that we do is empowered by the grace of God which is given to us through the Sacraments instituted by Christ, particularly the Sacrament of the Altar. And by means of this abundant grace w

e enjoy a diverse, vital, and close-knit parish family - young, old, rich, poor, of various ethnic origins and differing backgrounds. From our extraordinary music program to a growing church school, our guilds of bell ringers, gardeners and acolytes, to those who serve our long-standing Tuesday Night Community Dinner for the needy, the Advent is a community of faith which tries to keep the Gospel close to her heart and to live by Jesus' teaching. Parishioners and guests are cordially invited to a special awards ceremony to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the rehanging of The Advent's bells on Saturday, September 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the Library. The Church of the Advent will honor legendary change ringer Geoff Davies with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Parish of the Advent is a proud supporter of the Mama Caren School, Bungoma County, Kenya. In a region characterized by high poverty levels, alcoholism and a significant number of orphans due to the death of one or both parents, this school provides quality and affordable education for these children in need.

The nave's aumbry, adjacent the high altar, houses the Blessed Sacrament.

High atop the gilded spire sits a pelican feeding its young from its wounded breast: a symbol, found in many Christian churches world-wide, reflecting Christ's sacrifice for humanity and the gift of new life given through the Eucharist.

The Advent is home to a magnificent Aeolian-Skinner pipe organ:

"In general, pipe organs change slowly. The best of them add but little to the evolution of the instrument. To change the whole course of American organ building with a single instrument is a rarity indeed – scarcely a handful of organs have done this in two hundred years. Boston has been the happy site of two such events: the first was the opening of the Boston Music Hall organ in 1863; the other was the Advent organ in 1936. Not surprisingly, it became the Aeolian-Skinner showcase, and as time passed the impact on organ-building became more impressive and more profound. Harrison’s influence soon eclipsed all his contemporaries, and the genesis of his world-famous American Classic Style was in the Brimmer Street Church. The American Classic Organs, with their resplendent and instantly recognizable tone, were universally imitated in this country for 35 years. Thus the Advent organ was soon considered a pivotal organ of the 20th century."*

A shoutout to the dedicated corps of altar servers who make The Advent's liturgical customary possible:

Crucifers, thurifers, acolytes (candle-bearers), and masters of ceremonies (MC’s) support the clergy in the celebration of the Mass on Sundays and other days throughout the year, as well as at such services as Matins and Evensong. Together with the clergy and choir, the servers lead the congregation in worship.

Welcome Clare McCallan
Grafton House Senior Fellow

Clare McCallan is an author, journalist and media expert, working with several Christian television networks. She previously served as the co-founder and Creative Director of St. Joseph's Home for Artisans, a Catholic artist residency in Boston. As the inaugural Grafton House Senior Fellow, Clare will be working on collaborative projects for The Advent and Grafton House, including an exciting research project on our sometime parishioner Isabella Stewart Gardner. The Feast of the Assumption is this Saturday, August 15.

To mark this special Feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the The Society of Mary will hold a Ward meeting at 10:00 a.m. in Moseley Hall. This meeting will follow a Low Mass of the Assumption in the Lady Chapel at 9:00 a.m.

The evening offers a further worship service:

We and all our parish are invited and encouraged to attend a Solemn Mass of the Assumption celebrated by our sister parish, All Saints' Ashmont, at 7:00 p.m. A festal reception follows in that parish's Rectory.

O God, you have taken to yourself the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of your incarnate Son: Grant that we, who have been redeemed by his blood, may share with her the glory of your eternal kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
