What is A "Holy Door"?
A Holy Door - in Latin: Porta Sancta - is traditionally an entrance portal located within the Papal major basilicas in Rome. The doors are normally sealed by mortar and cement from the inside so that they cannot be opened. They are ceremonially opened during Jubilee years (every 25 years: 1900, 1924, ... 1975, 2000, 2025) designated by the Pope, for pilgrims who enter through those doors may piously gain the plenary indulgences attached with the Jubilee year celebrations.

On the first day of a holy year, the Pope strikes the brick wall with a silver hammer and opens it to the pilgrims.

The message imparted by the Holy Door is that God's mercy reaches out to mankind's frailty.

Please remember in prayer Edward Mulholland, PhD, beloved Professor Emeritus of Economics, who passed away peacefully on Sept. 21, 2023.

Dr. Ed Mulholland served with distinction at Regis College for over 48 years beginning with his appointment to faculty in September, 1966 and serving in a myriad of positions through December, 2014. Dr. Mulholland will be remembered fondly for his genuine kindness and embodiment of the CSJ values, his scholarship and tremendous dedication to his students, and his convivial manner with nearly five decades of Regis colleagues. Dr. Mulholland earned his bachelor's degree from St. Vincent’s College, and his master's and a PhD in economics from Boston College.

Students from the Class of 2006 paid tribute to Dr. Mulholland in the Mount Regis Yearbook. In their statement, they encapsulated why he was such a beloved dear neighbor:

"Dr. Ed Mulholland has been a full-time teacher, Academic Dean, Director of Graduate and Continuing Education, Associate Director of the Student Success Center, and advisor to first-year, sophomore, and transfer students, just to name a few of the many hats he has worn. He is a true Renaissance man, fusing economics with any and all other fields of study while being a living example of the CSJ charism. He is an "everyman," the hallmark of a good teacher. He has the heart and soul of a teacher, a comedian, and one who puts ethics into practice, not theory. You can see it in his smile and in the smiles of those who know him, whether a long-term friend or a new acquaintance. Mr. Mayor of Regis, we hope to follow in your footsteps and give back to Regis our time, our talent, and our hearts as you have so generously done."

An obituary will be published this Thursday.

Visiting hours will be held at the John Everett and Sons Funeral Home in Natick, MA on Monday, October 2, 2023 from 4 to 7 p.m.

The funeral liturgy will take place at St. Linus Church in Natick, MA on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at 10 a.m.
