Mass on Saturdays and is pastorally served by the pastors and priests of South Boston. Bishop Jean Lefebvre Cheverus, the first Bishop of the Boston archdiocese, built the chapel as a final resting place, for his friend

Father Francis Antony Matignon, Boston’s first Catholic priest, who died in September 1818. Father Matignon is buried near the altar. Many priests are entombed within the Chapel and cemetery grounds. More than 600 people are buried within the Cemetery grounds. Augustine’s Chapel is the oldest surviving Gothic-revival building in Massachusetts. It was restored and preserved by countless parishioners over the years. Augustine Chapel is a place of great historical and cultural importance. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The multitude of services it has held over the years, the parishioners who have tirelessly supported and maintained the grounds, and the priests who have faithfully served the community over the past 200 years combine to make this Chapel and Cemetery an important part of the South Boston and Archdiocese of Boston’s rich history.
