Massachusetts Council of Churches Making the Vibrant Church Visible!

The Massachusetts Council of Churches is a network of individuals, congregations and denominations convinced that what binds us together in Christ is stronger than anything that might divide us. "Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no division among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose."~ 1 Corinthians 1:10

The Mass Council of Churches embarked on a significant worship experience with the African Methodist Episcopal Zion 182nd Session of the New England Annual Conference, under Bishop George Crenshaw's leadership. This event provided a valuable chance to connect with the 'Zion' community. Notably, Rev. George Woodruff and Rev. Nakeida Bethel-Smith, alongside Presiding Elder King, contributed actively throughout the Communion service.

“This guidance should not be necessary,” the Rev. Mariama White-Hammond said. “Many of us follow a higher law that is thousands of years old. And we will not let any political agenda of the moment draw us away from those higher principles — this guidance reminds us how we lean in to following those things to which we have dedicated our lives.”

We were proud to stand with Governor Maura Healey today as Mass.gov issued new guidance for Houses of Worship. https://www.wgbh.org/news/local/2026-05-28/how-to-deal-with-ice-mass-governor-issues-guidance-for-hospitals-schools-churches

"Christian leaders — especially Black Christian leaders — must recognize that the preservation of history is not only cultural work; it is spiritual stewardship. Scripture repeatedly commands remembrance. God instructed Israel to tell the story, rehearse the testimony and pass down the truth to the next generation. Memory is a biblical mandate."

Church, read Massachusetts Council of Churches Associate Director Rev Kenneth Young's excellent new essay in Faith & Leadership on how we show up for this moment when Black history is actively being erased:

The current threats to Black historical memory should serve as a call for Christian leaders to preserve, celebrate and commemorate Black history, says a pastor of a historic church.

A truly wonderful clergy conference for The Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts, where the clergy serving in the diocese had their first chance to spend time with their new bishop, The Rt. Rev. Miguelina Howell. Nestled in the mountains of New Hampshire at the Barbara C. Harris Camp & Conference Center, we spent three days together.

It was a prayerful and intimate time, with worship and reflection led by The Rev. Dr. Mark Bozutti-Jones, as our chaplain.

It was a truthful and honest time as Bishop Miguelina openly shared her faithful approach to leadership and pastoring her people, and we collectively processed and envisioned the state of our ministries.

It was a FUN time, with chatting, hiking, our annual trivia tournament (perhaps someone on the MCC staff was on the winning team), and...a new tradition, brought by Bishop Miguelina: fiercely competitive and hilarious rounds of Spoons (the card game).

A blessed start to a new relationship between a bishop and her clergy, where Christ feels so present in heart-lifting worship, in grounded planning, and in bonds of real fellowship and friendship.

(Thanks to DioceseWMA and Rev. Dr. Bozutti-Jones for some of the photos as well.)
