We welcomed 7 new members to our congregation on Sunday, May 31st. As is the tradition, they signed the membership book and promised to participate and support the life of the community with their gifts, and ideas. Then they placed their copper strip into the concrete wall of our sanctuary—symbolizing that the church is held up by its members.

Sermon: “The Cliffhanger”
Rev. Dr. Stephanie May

In 2026 America, what meaningfully relevant role could religious life and institutions still play? As some religious institutions close their doors and others remain vibrant, how do we make sense of religious longing today—in ourselves and in others? In the long story of religious life in America, and of First Church Boston in particular, where might the story take us next? Where do you hope to go?

For Families: Childcare for children aged 1-8 is available with Noah and Anna. Ebonié Smith-Cooper will share a story for all ages in the service. Following the story, older children are invited to remain in the service after or to join Noah and Anna for stories, play, and craft. Children of all ages are also always welcome in the sanctuary.

Sermon: “Evolving Faith”
Mr. John Newhall

As a religious educator, I have accompanied people of all ages as they wrestle with who they are. It has never been clearer to me that self-discovery is not a single moment, but a constant journey of becoming. This month, as we explore our coming-of-age theme, I find myself exploring how our faith tradition is on that same journey, still discovering its own identity, its own voice, and its deepest values. Join me this Sunday as we reflect on what it means to grow as part of a living, evolving faith.

For Families: Childcare for children aged 1-8 is available with Noah and Anna. Dan Bash will share a story for all ages in the service. Following the story, older children are invited to remain in the service after or to join Noah and Anna for stories, play, and craft. Children of all ages are also always welcome in the sanctuary.

Sermon: "Becoming at Any Age”
Rev. Dr. Stephanie May

From the ancient Greek maxim “Know Thyself” to Henry David Thoreau’s retreat to “live deliberately” to today’s “selfie” culture, the search for self-understanding permeates our culture. In what ways might self-knowledge enrich our living and in what ways might the search for self-disrupt our connections to others? As we engage with Coming-of-Age stories this month, we explore what it means to deepen our self-knowledge at any age.

For Families: Childcare for children aged 1-8 is available with Noah and Anna. Noah Herrick will share a story for all ages in the service. Following the story, older children are invited to remain in the service after or to join Noah and Anna for stories, play, and craft. Children of all ages are also always welcome in the sanctuary.

The Greater Boston Interfaith Organization rallied in front of Citizens Bank in Copley Square today to press the bank to end business with GEO & CoreCivic—the for-profit companies building ICE detention centers where our neighbors are detained and suffering inhuman conditions. "Not with our Money, Citizens!"

GBIO withdrew $1 million dollars from Citizens, where they have $14 million invested, and are encouraging other institutions and individuals to do this same organized economic pressure to stop the suffering of our immigrant brothers and sisters.

Sermon: "Radical Revolutionaries— Then and Now"
Rev. Dr. Stephanie May

As we celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution, we laud the Patriots who fought for the freedoms we now enjoy. However, even by modern standards, many of their actions would be considered radical. In our moment of change, what role do radicals play? Following the service at 12:30 pm, Rev. May leads a discussion of Nina Sankovitch’s new book, Not Your Founding Father: How a Nonbinary Minister Became America's Most Radical Revolutionary.

For Families: Childcare for children aged 1-8 is available with Noah and Anna. Rev. May will share a story for all ages in the service. Following the story, older children are invited to remain in the service after or to join Noah and Anna for stories, play, and craft. Children of all ages are also always welcome in the sanctuary.
