In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that following Him is not always the easiest path. He calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him with trust.

The world encourages us to seek success, comfort, possessions, and recognition. Christ asks us to seek something greater.

What are we working so hard to gain, and what might we be losing along the way?

Lord, give us the courage to follow You and to trust that true life is found in You.

The Redemptorist Missionary

“Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in humility of heart and persevering in prayer,” Redemptorists seek to follow Christ the Redeemer with joyful hearts, proclaiming the Gospel through the simplicity of their lives and bringing His plentiful redemption to all.

The Church continues to need men willing to answer Christ’s call and dedicate their lives to sharing the abundant redemption found in Him. If you have ever felt the Lord inviting you to serve His people through prayer, preaching, missionary work, or parish ministry, consider whether He may be calling you to the Redemptorist way of life.

Do you feel a desire to serve the most abandoned, especially the poor? Perhaps God is inviting you to include the Redemptorists in your discernment journey.

Or perhaps you know someone who simply needs an invitation. A young man in your family, parish, school, or community may be quietly discerning God’s call. Sometimes a simple word of encouragement—“Have you ever considered a vocation to the priesthood or religious life?”—can open a door for the Holy Spirit to work.

Through the intercession of St. Alphonsus Liguori and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, we pray that more generous hearts will respond to Christ’s call with courage and joy, bringing the hope of the Gospel to those most in need of God’s mercy.

On August 15th, the Catholic Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a holy day honoring the belief that, at the end of her earthly life, Mary was taken body and soul into the glory of Heaven.

The Assumption reminds us of Mary’s unique place in God’s plan of salvation and points toward the hope promised to all the faithful, the resurrection of the body and eternal life with God. In Mary, we see the fulfillment of a life completely entrusted to the Lord and a beautiful sign of the glory that awaits those who remain faithful to Christ.

As we celebrate this joyful feast, we are invited to follow Mary’s example of faith, humility, and trust in God. Her Assumption directs our hearts toward Heaven and reminds us that our earthly journey has an eternal destination. May Mary, assumed into Heaven, continue to intercede for us and draw us ever closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has proclaimed a Jubilee Year of Saint Francis, marking the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi’s passage to Heaven (1226–2026).

During this special Jubilee Year, the faithful throughout the world are invited to rediscover the extraordinary witness of St. Francis and to follow his example of holiness, humility, love of Christ, and peace. His life reminds us that the call to sainthood is not something reserved for another time or place, it is a call addressed to each of us today.

As we commemorate this important anniversary, may the example of the Seraphic Father inspire us to become faithful witnesses of the Gospel and instruments of Christ’s peace in our families, communities, and world.

The Church has also granted a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, to the faithful who devoutly participate in this extraordinary Jubilee, which runs from January 10, 2026 through January 10, 2027.

Today (August 1st) we celebrate the Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, founder of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists), Doctor of the Church, and patron saint of moral theologians and confessors.

His unwavering trust in God’s mercy and his deep love for prayer continue to inspire the faithful throughout the world. As members of a parish served by the The Redemptorists we give thanks for his enduring legacy and renew our commitment to sharing Christ’s redeeming love with all, especially those most
in need of hope.

Born near Naples in 1696, St. Alphonsus was a lawyer who left behind a successful career to answer God’s call to the priesthood. In 1732, he founded the Redemptorists to preach the Gospel to the poor and the most abandoned in rural communities, ensuring that no one was forgotten. Through his compassionate preaching, tireless missionary work, and prolific spiritual writings including The Glories of Mary and Visits to the Blessed Sacrament, he helped countless people encounter the loving mercy of God.

🇺🇸 As we continue celebrating 250 years of our nation's founding, did you know that our parish property is connected to the American Revolution?

Long before the Basilica was built, the property at the corner of Tremont Street and St. Alphonsus Street was home to Datchet House, also known as Brinley Place, an elegant country estate built in 1723 by Colonel Francis Brinley. Later purchased and expanded by Boston merchant Robert Pierpont, the mansion became known as "Pierpont's Castle."

During the Revolutionary War, the estate played a small but significant role in our nation's history. General Artemas Ward, commander of the Massachusetts forces during the Siege of Boston, established his headquarters at the mansion. While directing the Continental Army from his headquarters in Cambridge, George Washington visited General Ward at this very site, making the property part of the story of America's fight for independence.

Nearly a century later, the Redemptorists purchased the historic estate in 1869 to establish what would become the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The old mansion continued to serve the community until it was demolished in 1902 to make way for the present Rectory, which still stands on the same historic foundation today. The photo shown here is what the property looked like just before the Rectory was built.

As we mark America's 250th anniversary, we remember that our parish is built upon ground where faith, history, and the story of our nation have come together for more than three centuries.

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Redeemer, the principal feast of the Redemptorist Congregation. It is a joyful reminder that Jesus Christ, through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection, has redeemed the world and opened the way to eternal life. The Cross is not simply a sign of suffering, it is the greatest expression of God's boundless love and mercy for all humanity.

For the Redemptorists, whose mission was founded by Saint Alphonsus Liguori in 1732, this feast is at the very heart of their vocation. Inspired by the words, "With Him there is plentiful redemption" (Psalm 130:7), The Redemptorists are called to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ, especially to those who are poor, abandoned, and most in need of hope. Their ministry is a constant witness that no one is beyond the reach of God's redeeming love.

As a Redemptorist parish, we give thanks today for the gift of our Redeemer and for the missionary spirit that continues to guide our community. May this feast renew our confidence in Christ's mercy, strengthen our faith, and inspire us to share His love with all whom we meet.

Watch Fr. Dabney’s recent reflection, a powerful story of faith, vocation, and the quiet ways God works in our lives.

Growing up in a Navy family, Fr. Dabney moved often, but two images always followed his family from house to house: an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help and a photograph of his uncle, Father Lawrence Lynch, C.Ss.R., an Army chaplain who was killed in action on Okinawa in 1945 while holding the Sacred Host.

For years, these two images seemed separate, one received his prayers, the other his admiration. Only later did he discover how deeply connected they truly were and how, together, they had quietly helped lead him toward his own vocation.

As our nation celebrates 250 years of independence this weekend, we give thanks to God for the blessings of liberty, faith, and the many freedoms we enjoy. May we continue to pray for our country, our leaders, and all who have sacrificed to preserve these precious gifts.

We wish everyone a safe, joyful, and blessed Independence Day weekend!

Holiday Schedule – Friday, July 3 & Saturday, July 4
⛪ One daily Mass: 9:00 AM (both days)
❌ No other morning Masses or the 12:10 PM Mass on either day.
🏢 The Rectory Office will be closed on July 3 and July 4.
