Title: Renewing the mind
Text: Romans 12:2
The mind is a very crucial part of human life. Everything we say or do originates from our mind (Prov. 23:7). If we must fulfill God’s purpose for our lives, there are certain things we must change. Renewing means to change something from bad to good (or old to new) as an ongoing process. It is a continuous transformation, which is what the Lord expects from us until His full image is formed in us. So, what are common things a Christian should change from as part of this ongoing transformation process?
(i) You must change from the ways and customs of the world. Your life pursuits and aspirations should not be focused only on worldly gains. 1 John 2:15-16; 1 Tim. 6:6-7
(ii) You need to come out of every mold or stereotype, either imposed or assumed, that has been affecting your thinking. Some people have been told that they cannot go beyond a certain level of achievement, and they have unconsciously allowed that in their thinking. You need to get rid of every negative thinking. Mark 10:46-52; 1 Tim. 4:12; Zech. 4:10.
(iii) Change from the mentality of a beggar to that of a son that has the right to God’s inheritance. God is your father; never assume there is anything too big for God to do for you. Rom. 8:14-16; Gal. 4:1-7; Matt. 6:9-13.
(iv) Change from being fearful to being courageous. 2 Tim. 1:7; Josh. 1:6.
(v) Change from being far from God to being closer to Him. Isa. 59:1-2; James 4:8.
To achieve these, you must:
(i) Pray for the grace and courage to take the steps necessary for the change. Luke 18:1; 1 Thess. 5:17
(ii) Improve on the time you spend in studying and meditating on the Word of God. 2 Tim. 2:15; Josh. 1:8.
(iii) Be open to new ideas and ways of thinking that are in line with God’s word. Acts 10:9-16; Prov. 13:20; 15:22.
(vi) Have an open mind to criticism that exposes your shortcomings; we are all work in progress until we meet Him in glory. Prov. 12:1; Prov. 9:8.
(vi) Occupy your mind with productive thinking but not with destructive thinking. Slandering, back-biting, gossiping, wasteful jesting, etc., should be strongly avoided. You may need to cut off some unfruitful friendships. 1 Corin. 10:5; Phil. 4:8.
