The votes are in for the 2024 UUA General Assembly! Article II changes, three Actions of Immediate Witness, one Responsive Resolution and our Business Resolution have all passed. We are deeply grateful to all who held this imperfect but faithful process with care, especially our Co-Moderators, Board of Trustees, UUA staff and volunteers. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to move outward from here, with all of you, finding new ways to live our shared values, centering love in all we do.

The years-long democratic process culminated with debate and the GA vote. A two-thirds majority was required for approval.

What a journey it has been! In less than two weeks the delegates of the 2024 Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) General Assembly will take up the final vote on our proposal to amend Article II of the UUA bylaws. We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to all who have participated in our study of that which holds our congregations together in community and the purpose of our shared ministry through the UUA. From the wisdom shared through panel discussions and developed religious education resources, to the numerous individual who took the time to share their insights through surveys and feedback sessions. Thank You.

I’m excited to share that we have another new resource available for engaging with the Article II revision to UUA Bylaws. This resource is a children’s curriculum to support learning about love at the center. In 17 workshops, children explore UU values in faithful play with Legos®.

The curriculum includes centering activities, covenant building, and many different hands-on activities. A heartfelt thanks to Kathy E. Smith, the credentialed religious educator who created this curriculum and is offering it to UUs at no charge.

I am profoundly grateful to the many Unitarian Universalist leaders who have contributed to our evolving collection of Article II resources for reflection and engagement. One recent addition is a beautiful theological reflection that explores our theological inheritance for each of the values included in the proposed revision of Article II, weaving them together a bit like a patchwork quilt. Deep appreciation and gratitude to the Rev. Dr. Sheri Prud’homme for responding so skillfully to my request for a theological resource. This document will be particularly helpful for preachers, curriculum writers, congregational leaders who facilitate conversations, and any interested UUs.

I send my love and gratitude to all of the members of the Article II Study Commission for the work they have done - and they continue to do - in support of Unitarian Universalism. UU World recently interviewed the Commission’s Co-chairs, the Rev. Cheryl M. Walker and Rob Spirko, and their comments are inspiring.

Rev. Walker affirms in response to a question about her hopes for the future of this work: “I have one more hope: that in twenty years some other group does this again. We are not writing a creed, we are not etching in stone, we are writing in pencil, and we hope that in twenty to thirty years, as the world has changed again and there are things we need to say that we did not say this time, that somebody changes it again—so that we are a Living Tradition, not one that is stagnant.”
