The boxes were getting lighter.

Students kept coming.
One after another.
Then another.

We were handing out donuts as fast as we could, and for a minute, it looked like we might actually run out.

So. Many. Students.

So many smiling faces.
So many “thank yous.”
So many little moments that make waking up early worth it.

But lately, we’ve been realizing something about Donut Drop.

Yes, we’re showing up for our Rusheon students. We’re loving on them, learning their names, hearing about their mornings, and reminding them that they matter.

But somehow, it has become about so much more than that.

We’ve become friends with the ladies at Dunkin who see us every Monday evening for pickup.

A man stopped us on the sidewalk while we were heading back for a donut, water, and protein bar and asked if we took donations.

And there are all these little connections happening that we never planned for.

That’s the beautiful thing about simply showing up.

You never really know who you’ll meet.
You never know what conversations will happen.
You never know how a small act of kindness might ripple a little further than you expected.

We started with donuts for students.

But God keeps reminding us that ministry is rarely contained to the people we set out to serve.

Sometimes it’s a student.
Sometimes it’s a bus driver.
Sometimes it’s a Dunkin employee.
Sometimes it’s a stranger walking down the sidewalk.

Just keep showing up.

The donuts might run out.

But we’re praying the kindness never does.

Some mornings, renewing the life of our community looks pretty ordinary.

A student stops by on the way into school. Grabs a donut, maybe a protein bar, a bottle of water, or a piece of fruit. Says thank you and heads off to start the day.

That was Donut Drop this morning. No big moment or great story. Just a steady stream of kids stopping by. And it seems like we are seeing more of them this year than we did last year.

I’m learning that this is what so much of ministry looks like. You show up. You offer what you have. You smile and say good morning. You do it again next Tuesday.

And somewhere along the way, we hope these kids begin to know that there are people in this community who see them, care about them, and are glad they’re here.

Donut by donut.
