Discerning Our Real Work

On this Labor Day, we focus on work as a critical part of life. We can ask ourselves what makes us feel good about our work and how what we do for a living contributes to living a life of purpose. In this talk we share several hopes for your work, and the work of everyone on this planet. Such hopes help us answer the questions of what to do with what we have been given: what to let go of and what to give ourselves to. So that our work becomes an expression of our life’s meaningful purpose. Bill McClane will speak on this topic.

Sacred Spaces: Shugendō, a mountain religion in Japan
Dr. Mai will discuss basic practices and beliefs of Shugendō, a Japanese Shinto-Buddhist blended tradition that embeds a practitioner’s ascetic practices into sacred mountain pilgrimage routes. More broadly, we will consider how religions “make” spaces sacred by using them to generate extraordinary individual experiences through ritual and community.

🌎 Join Us for Our Annual Welcome Breakfast: Breakfast Around the World

Every culture has a way of gathering around the breakfast table, and every shared meal is an opportunity to learn, connect, and celebrate our diversity.

We continue our joyful tradition of having an August combined service and breakfast to welcome new and old friends, as many of us return to town and to school. We will share food, music, and readings–and the Boone UUkes, our very own ukulele group, will return with some UU favorites!

Alongside our service, we'll enjoy a morning of delicious food, meaningful conversation, and warm fellowship.

If you'd like to contribute, consider bringing a favorite breakfast dish inspired by a country or culture from around the world. It could be a cherished family recipe or something you've always wanted to try! Please bring a card with the country of origin, the name of your dish, any allergens (e.g., dairy, gluten, sesame, tree nuts), and whether the dish contains meat.

Whether you're brand new to Boone UU, have been visiting for a while, or have been part of our community for years, we'd love to have you at the table.

Repairing the World

Tikkun Olam is a Jewish concept that means “repair the world”; it is also understood as “any activity that improves the world, bringing it closer to the harmonious state for which it was created.” We all have a responsibility to each other and the world at large, especially as we watch events unfolding around us. Now more than ever, it is time for us to help bring the world into that harmonious state for which it was created and to look at what our role is here. This Sunday's service will be presented by Leslie McClane.
