What a follower of Jesus looks like!

Throughout the first five centuries people understood Christianity primarily as a way of life in the present, not as a doctrinal system, esoteric belief, or promise of eternal salvation. By followers enacting Jesus’s teachings, Christianity changed and improved the lives of its adherents and served as a practical spiritual pathway. This way—and earliest Christians were called “the People of the Way”—bettered existence for countless ancient believers….
Christian defenders, such as Justin Martyr (ca. 100–ca. 165), used the example of Christian practice to make the case that Jesus’s way “mended lives”:
We who formerly … valued above all things the acquisition of wealth and possessions, now bring what we have into a common stock, and communicate to everyone in need; we who hated and destroyed one another, and on account of their different manners would not live with [people] of a different tribe, now, since the coming of Christ, live familiarly with them, and pray for our enemies. [1]
To Justin, the old ways had passed; a new way opened in Jesus. Far from being divisive, Christianity was an inclusive faith that might bring diverse peoples together. However one interpreted the effects of the new faith, both enemies and defenders of Christianity understood that the new religion transformed people, giving even women, peasants, and slaves a meaningful ability to reorder their lives.
In the first centuries of the church, Jesus’s command to love God with our whole selves and to love our neighbor as ourselves was central to Christian identity and practice.
More than anything else, Christianity is a love song. People shy away from saying that out loud, though…. Perhaps Christians fear that they themselves barely understand the radical implications of a way of life based on the love of God…. Certainly, in the eyes of many contemporary critics, Christianity does not seem very loving….
Yet love is what Jesus preached—and what he embodied. In the early church, devout Christians tried to embody God’s love and to experience God in such a way that love reshaped their lives. “Love for God is ecstatic, making us go out from ourselves,” wrote Dionysios the Areopagite around 500; “it does not allow the lover to belong anymore to himself [or herself], but he [or she] belongs only to the Beloved.” Not all Christians achieved this; they too struggled with loving God. But Romans frequently criticized the Christian emphasis on love as somehow a little deluded and perhaps prurient, suggesting that followers of the Jesus Way made it known that theirs was a path of love. Early Christians insisted that love—not rationality or politics or even virtue—was the primary bond between God and human beings. Love was God’s symphony, the perfect beauty that human beings experienced through practices of faith—by imitating Christ and following his way.

11th Sun Ord Time 2026
Ex:19:2-6; Ps.100; Rom. 5:6-11; Matt 9:36-10:8

God has shown us great compassion in-spite of our sins.
We rejoice and celebrate that compassion here at the Eucharist
Here we give thanks. We are not condemned, we are loved.
We have been given so much; much is expected from us.

The readings show that compassion is the main ingredient of God’s work.
Compassion shown to the Israelites even though they were often unfaithful to God.
Paul speaks of how compassionate Jesus is toward those who are helpless, and ungodly and even while still sinning.
Recall his reaction from the cross.

The Gospel tells of Jesus bring moved with pity for the crowds….
God’s Compassion is abundant but those who administer it are few…. Pray for more laborers.

We are who we pray for…
having been shown compassion by our God
We are sent out as His Laborers to announce God’s Kingdom…
by being compassionate to all.

Body and Blood of Jesus // Corpus Christi

When Jesus Ascended into heaven he trusted us
to continue his work; to seek truth,
overcome bitterness, hatred and violence
with love and mercy. To be inclusive and compassionate.
To be His Body in today’s world.

God’s ways are scandalous to us…
loving our enemies - doing good to those who harm us - is absurd.

At this Eucharist are bread and wine truly turned into the Body and Blood of Jesus?
Yes, that is our belief. Science and reason make it very hard to believe. It is only with faith that we can believe what science can’t prove and reason can’t discern..

We also believe that not only is bread and wine changed into the Body of Christ but we, his followers, are changed as well, we become the Body of Christ in today’s world.
We become what we eat. This too is difficult to believe without faith.

As difficult as it is I believe it is much easier and far more comfortable to just celebrate the change of bread and wine than for us to actually change and become the Body of Christ . To celebrate His life in and through us… to live as he would. In fact, at our Baptism we put on Christ; our life is no longer our own it is Christ who lives in us.

His life is such a threat to our way of life, and our way of justice,
and our way of conditional love. Yes, it is a lot safer and far more comfortable for us to celebrate the bread and wine change.

So what if the bread and wine change, there’s no threat in that… it stays on the altar or in the tabernacle its change goes no further. It is only when we allow the change to happen to us that it makes a difference because we go out into the world as the Body of Christ.

So, think about your responsibility as the Body of Christ when you receive Holy Communion. Your life purpose is to make His true presence felt in today’s world.
Be Jesus when talking about the immigrants, the LGBTQ+, the various races and different religions, issues of war, the economy, the ongoing inhumane treatment of our fellow man.

Now, come and allow the change of bread and wine to effect the change in you, be the Body and the Blood of Christ today…. and make a difference… a big difference!

Most people think the Trinity is Christianity's most complicated doctrine.

I think it's Christianity's answer to the deepest human question:

Do I belong?

Before there was creation, there was relationship: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Before there were stars, there was the love between them.

And through Christ, humanity has been welcomed into that love.

The final truth about your life is not separation.

The final truth about your life is communion.
