From the Bible Reading Plan for June 25: Mark 10

What is impossible for man is possible with God. Jesus told His disciples that it was hard for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. In that day, the rich were often considered blessed by God, as if their ticket to heaven had already been punched. But Jesus was teaching that salvation is not something we achieve. It is a miracle of God’s grace.

“Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” These were the words of the father of the demon-possessed boy. It was an honest prayer. Faith does not mean we never struggle. Faith brings our struggles and weaknesses to Jesus.

God is not impressed by religious appearance if our hearts are far from Him.

The Pharisees were upset because Jesus’ disciples did not follow their handwashing traditions. Jesus showed them that outward religion can never replace inward devotion. We can look religious on the outside while our hearts are far from God.

Despite His efforts to withdraw for rest, the crowds found Jesus. When Jesus saw them, He had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus sees our deepest needs. He provides for us, but He also shepherds us with truth.

Jesus sees the person everyone else tried to avoid. People wanted nothing to do with the demon-possessed man. He lived among the tombs. He cut himself and cried out day and night. But Jesus showed him mercy, and changed his life.

Jesus reminds us that what is hidden will one day be revealed. Nothing stays secret before God. That is both a warning and an encouragement. It warns us not to hide sin in the dark, because God sees what no one else sees.

But it also encourages us to live faithfully, even when no one notices, because God sees that too.

In Mark 3, Jesus appointed the twelve disciples. They were not perfect, but Jesus chose them, taught them, and sent them. God does not wait until we are impressive before He uses us. He calls ordinary people to follow Him and join His mission.
