One of the things I believe is a consistent life issue for all of us is the releasing of the negativities both large and small that we are all heir to by virtue of being human.
I’ve found it’s a process that pays huge dividends in happiness and peace of mind and soul. My great friend and mentor, Dr. Norman Vincent Peale compared our minds to that of a windshield that can become covered over with layers of dust and grime by the events and our reactions no matter our time in the spiritual life.
I believe that good spirituality is good psychology and vice versa. The Jesus Christ principle works for all and in forgiveness and making a new start it is simply this: Remember that most people, yourself included, are doing about the best they can given their knowledge and awareness at the time.
I found it of great benefit to ask yourself if the person you are today would do or say the same thing that the person you were yesterday said or did. All of us are “works in progress” and life is simply to large and grand to place a period where God has placed a comma. More than that it just feels better to walk into a new day unencumbered by the regrets, guilts, and remorse of yesterday. The problem is that sometimes our egos get a perverse “delight” in holding on to past hurts. A false sense of aliveness can attend the nursing of negativity. Some folks build large stories around their hurts.
It is unfortunate but sometimes true that we would rather be “right” than happy. It may be misery but at least it’s a familiar type of misery.
Unity co-founder Charles Fillmore offered this priceless exercise. He said every night spend at least a half hour mentally reviewing your thinking and release and bless everyone and everything you have negative feelings toward. Just the attempt however halting it may feel at first brings forth a spiritual renewal. Just a willingness to let it all go.
Like any other practice, it becomes easier with practice and the rewards reaped come ultimately with that pearl of great price: peace of mind. May we all be blessed as we remember and reclaim the God power within that is available to us at all times for the choosing.
In Love, Light, and Peace,
Rev. Jay
