Jonah 1:1-16 describes how God commanded Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach against its wickedness, but Jonah fled in the opposite direction to Tarshish. A violent storm arose as a result of Jonah's disobedience, leading the sailors to fear for their lives and ultimately to throw Jonah overboard, after which the sea calmed and the sailors offered sacrifices to God. Jonah's attempt to escape God's command resulted in a storm and his eventual casting into the sea.

This passage illustrates themes of disobedience, divine authority, and the consequences of fleeing from God's commands.
