This is one of the more difficult passages because it appears to be in contrast to Paul's teaching that we are saved by grace and not works. I think the problem is our understanding of what faith actually is. Faith is not me wanting to be true but my receptivity to God's activity.

In this passage James addresses the church assemblies on showing partiality for the wealthy. Even in our day it can be tempting to show partiality to the wealthy because we they think they can help us in our efforts for the kingdom. All people are to be welcomed into the church with the same love and respect as those who are in need of the gospel.

James call the authentic believer to turn from the works of the flesh and be doers of the word. Works don't make us righteous or provide us redemption. However, we are called to hear what God says and then obey Him. Pauls says the same thing about putting off and putting on. There are many who've made professions of faith but show no interest in the King or His Kingdom. That person needs to examine their hearts to ensure they are in Christ and His Spirit is living in them.

James is dealing with problems of a quickly growing and inmature church. He's speaking directlty to Jewish Chrisitians about how to live life in a hostile enviornment. God has promises a crown of life to all who love Him. We know that we love Him because He first loved us.

James is often misunderstood because it seems to be a contradition to Paul but if we read it correctly, I believe we will see they are saying the same thing with a different emphasis. James tells us to count it all joy when we enter suffering because it creates a steadfast faith that is fully dependent upon God.
