MOTHERS OF THE FAITH • PART TWO

Mary and Martha

“Mary has chosen the good portion.”
Luke 10:42

The sisters of Bethany reveal two beautiful expressions of discipleship.

Martha welcomed Christ into her home and served Him with diligence, generosity, and love. Mary sat at His feet, listening attentively to His words and seeking the one thing needful.

The Church honors both sisters because the Christian life is nourished by both service and prayer. Martha teaches faithful labor offered to God. Mary teaches attentiveness to God and a heart devoted to His presence.

Together they remind us that every gift, every vocation, and every act of love finds its fulfillment when centered on Christ.

Which do you relate to more today: Martha’s service or Mary’s contemplation?

YOUR FIRST VISIT TO A GREEK ORTHODOX MONASTERY

A monastery is far more than a beautiful destination. It is a place of prayer, repentance, silence, and communion with God.

For many pilgrims, a first visit can feel unfamiliar. What should you wear? Where should you stand? When should you venerate the icons? What is the proper way to receive Holy Communion?

This guide offers practical guidance rooted in the traditions observed in many Greek Orthodox monasteries so that your visit may be reverent, peaceful, and spiritually fruitful.

Every monastery has its own customs. Observe carefully, follow the guidance of the monastics, and approach everything with humility and gratitude.

May your pilgrimage draw you closer to Christ and deepen your love for His Holy Church.

Have you ever visited an Orthodox monastery? Share the name of the monastery in the comments.

MOTHERS OF THE FAITH • PART ONE

The Theotokos

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
Luke 1:46–47

We begin this new series with the woman through whom the Word became flesh.

The Theotokos stands at the center of Orthodox devotion because her life bears witness to the mystery of the Incarnation. Through her humble obedience, God entered human history. Through her faithful “yes,” salvation was revealed to the world.

From the Annunciation to Golgotha, from the Cross to Pentecost, her life is woven into the story of our redemption. As the Mother of God, she carried in her womb the Creator of all things. As our Mother, she continues to bring our prayers before her Son.

Every mother in this series reflects something of her faith, courage, sacrifice, and love. It is fitting that we begin with the First Mother of the Faith, the Most Holy Theotokos.

Who would you like to see featured next in the Mothers of the Faith series?

The Orthodox Church Building | Did You Know?
From the moment the faithful cross the threshold of the Narthex, every space in the Orthodox church speaks a spiritual truth. The faithful once removed their shoes before entering, leaving the world behind. Men and women stand in reverent distinction before God. The Ambo carried the Word of God into the midst of the people. The Bishop’s seat faces the faithful as a living icon of Christ the Teacher. The Royal Gates open only at sacred moments, a reminder that what passes through them is holy.

Monday of the Holy Spirit

From the very breath of the Risen Christ upon His Apostles, to the rushing wind of Pentecost, to the laying on of hands passed from bishop to bishop through every generation, the Holy Spirit has never left His Church. This is Scripture. The same Spirit who descended in tongues of fire still moves through the laying on of hands, still guards the Holy Tradition, still abides in the Church as the pillar and ground of truth. St. Paul himself commands us to hold fast to what was delivered not only by letter but by word of mouth, because God never intended His Church to be a book alone, but a living Body, breathing with the life of the Holy Spirit. Swipe through these five slides and let Scripture tell the story from beginning to now. The Comforter has come.

Every prostration tells the story of salvation.

We descend in humility, acknowledging our sins and our need for God. We rise again through His mercy, forgiveness, and the victory of Christ’s Resurrection.

This is why the Church understands prostrations as expressing both repentance and resurrection. The movement itself becomes a living prayer: we fall, we humble ourselves, and God raises us up by His grace.

When venerating holy icons, Orthodox Christians traditionally kiss the hands, the feet, or the Gospel Book or scroll depicted in the icon. These places honor the saint or the holy person represented while preserving reverence for the icon. The face is customarily not kissed.

From Holy Pascha until Pentecost, the faithful traditionally stand in prayer, rejoicing in the Resurrection and the promise of the age to come.

“For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Luke 18:14

The Icon of the Panagia at the Holy Church of St. Lazarus, Larnaca, Cyprus

One of the oldest known prayers to the Theotokos, dating to the third century.

For nearly 1,800 years, Orthodox Christians have turned to the Mother of God in times of trial, seeking her intercessions before her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

“Under thy compassion we take refuge, O Theotokos.”

May the Most Holy Theotokos pray for us and lead us ever closer to Christ.
